Have you ever just had the weirdest dream from out of nowhere that just leaves you scratching your head and saying, “What the hell?”? I had one last night. I, a 57-year-old man, was on American Idol, talking to Steven Tyler and he was telling me that for the next show, we’re doing songs from Broadway.
Now, keep in mind that I’m far older than American Idol allows for contestants, I haven’t watched that show in over seven years, and Tyler isn’t a part of the show anymore and hasn’t been in quite some time. So why all of that is invading my dreams, I have no idea.
So Tyler tells me that and in my head, and the dream, I’m going over what songs I know from various musicals, such as Rent!, Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, and Hairspray. I think I was even reviewing songs from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, singing them in my mind, as to what would sound good for the show. By the way, I sounded like myself in my dream singing sequences and whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, the jury is still out. I used to have a fairly decent voice back in the day and even did the Choir thing in middle school, plus I used to be a big fan of karaoke back in the day as well. Waylon and Conway’s songs were my forte’ and I wasn’t bad, but ready for American Idol or Broadway? No, I doubt that.
So, what was I saying? I’m reviewing and selecting songs in my mind from assorted musicals, singing them, and trying to decide if they’re Idol-worthy or not. And then I hear a voice saying that we’ll do them all for the album. What album? Again, what the hell? And then I woke up because I needed to pee.
And that leads me to the here and now. What if the dream came true? What if I was told to go on American Idol and sing songs from Broadway and musicals as I prepared to put them on an album? What if, blah, blah, blah. What songs would I do? Let’s find out. This just gives me a reason to share some songs that I enjoy and would possibly attempt as I become the next American Idol. Don’t worry though. I’m not going to video and record myself singing them. Not unless enough people request it and then all bets are off. I’m just going to share videos from YouTube with the original artists singing the songs I would probably try to do. I’ve picked three that I know I could rock out and have fun with. Here you go. You’re welcome. Enjoy.
So what do you think? Should I record myself singing these songs, hoping that someone from American Idol or Hollyweird sees the videos and immediately falls in love and decides to make me a star? Or should I just keep dreaming? Let me know in the comments, along with any questions or thoughts. I’m going back to bed. And this has been a Day of Dougie. Thanks for reading and listening and I’ll see you on the short bus.
