NXT & Survivor Series Predictions
November 18, 2016
It’s a big weekend for the WWE, the city of Toronto and wrestling fans in general. The WWE has taken over the city of Toronto and will be holding two big live events this weekend, exclusive to pay-per-view buyers and subscribers to the WWE Network. On Saturday, the men and women of NXT will do their thing with a great event highlighted by Shinsuke Nakamura defending the NXT Championship against the challenge of Samoa Joe. And then, on Sunday night, it’s a night of brand versus brand as we have three multi-person elimination matches as it’s RAW versus Smackdown, plus the man who dominated WCW for so many years returns to the ring after over a decade away to face “The Beast” Brock Lesnar. Two shows with a lot of hype and build, all for us, the fans of pro-wrestling / sports-entertainment. And of course, with two big shows coming up, that means it’s time to break out the crystal ball, the tarot cards and the magic 8-ball. I’m Doug, your host with the most, and it’s prediction time. So in my best “Sister Cleo” voice, “are you ready mon’?”… I said… “Are you ready?”. This never works with the written stuff. I guess you need a live audience and a microphone to make it happen. *sighs* It’s time for some predictions. Let’s just do this already…
WWE NXT TAKEOVER: TORONTO – Thoughts and Predictions…
WWE NXT Title Match:
-Samoa Joe vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (c)
I love watching these two men compete against each other. I’ve never been a big fan of Samoa Joe, but I appreciate the brutality and toughness he brings to the ring and each and every match. And Nakamura is just poetry in motion to watch perform in that ring. His style is kind of hit or miss in my opinion, but it grows on you and his character and personality is strong and enduring. So what happens here? Does Joe kick ass and take names and take back his championship or does the master of the “strong-style” overcome the odds and head to the next NXT Takeover Event in Japan as the reigning champion and hero? I think we’ll see one helluva match. That goes pretty much without saying. And I think we’ll see a title change here. No matter how it goes, these two men are so good, wins and losses don’t really matter. Joe wins here to regain the title and then at the next NXT: Takeover event in Japan, Nakamura gets his rematch and goes in as the man determined to perform in his home country and be the conquering hero, attempting to bring that title back home. Sounds like a plan to me.
Winner and NEW NXT Champion: Samoa Joe
NXT Women’s Title Match:
-Mickie James vs. Asuka (c)
This should be one helluva match and a great mix of contrasting styles and different eras, but let’s be honest here. If Vince Russo was doing the booking, we’d have Mickie win and capture the title for some major hot-shotting. But it’s not Russo as the booker (thank God!) and cooler heads should prevail. We’ll get a great match and heads will turn. In the end though, the right woman will win and Asuka’s reign as the top woman in NXT will continue.
Winner and STILL NXT Women’s Champion: Asuka
2 of 3 Falls for the NXT Tag Team Titles:
-Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa vs. The Revival (c’s)
Two out of three falls is the catch here. The Revival will use trickery and old-school shenanigans to capture the first fall in quick manner. We’ll see Gargano and Ciampa come back to win the second fall and it will be glorious, just like their videos with Bobby Roode. And in the third fall, old school triumphs with brutality and pain as the Revival wins the match and hold on to their tag team gold.
Winners and STILL Champions: The Revival
Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Finals:
-The Authors of Pain vs. TM-61
The catch to all of this is, same as he was during the classic “Last Battle of Atlanta” so many years ago, Precious Paul Ellering, the manager of the Authors of Pain, will be suspended high above the ring in a shark cage, thus to avoid his interference and shenanigans from ringside. And that will make all the difference in my eyes. TM-61 are the underdogs and are being built as the fan-favorite franchise for NXT. That means overcoming the odds, taking a beating from hell, and snatching a victory from the jaws of defeat, plus after three heel wins so far, gives the fans a major reason to be happy. TM-61 wins the finals of the tournament and the Dusty Rhodes tribute trophy, if you will, and takes that trip to the pay window.
-Bobby Roode vs. Tye Dillinger
Bobby Roode is glorious and has the best theme song in wrestling today. He can win or lose and it doesn’t matter right now. Tye Dillinger can’t really afford to lose right now, at least not in my opinion, so I’d expect one heck of a good match. I’d expect to see Roode dominate for 98% of the match and get overconfident. And when he makes that one mistake, Tye sneaks in and steals the victory.
Winner: Tye Dillinger
And there you go. And then, with NXT Takeover: Toronto in the books, the WWE will move on and focus on one of their biggest events of the year, the only time (so far) that the RAW and Smackdown brands compete against each other, the Survivor Series. It’s a stacked card, especially if you’re a fan of tag team wrestling and elimination style matches. I do have to admit one thing here though. It kind of annoys me to see men and women who are feuding and having issues, week in and week out, all of a sudden all smiles and happy as a team because why? They’re fighting for their brand? I know we’re supposed to suspend our belief sometimes when it comes to the world’s greatest sport, but at least show some tension and hard feelings between the teams and the wrestlers. Show a few frowns and muttered words under the breath when former foes are forced to team. Sheamus and Cesaro are great at this and the team of Anderson and Gallows is playing it right. AJ Styles is doing this too, but the rest. In the tag team gathering backstage at Smackdown Live, why are the Usos clowning around and smiling when King Booker came in to do his schtick? They just turned on all of their former friends and tried to put the American Alpha dude out of wrestling repeatedly. Why was Roman Reigns smiling and laughing when Chris Jericho, a man who has attacked him several times, is verbally attacking AJ Styles and James Ellsworth and threatening to put them on “the list”? It was funny. Yes, I admit it. Jericho is comedy gold and Ellsworth’s facial expressions and reactions, as well as Styles, were great. But Roman is out there with several men, as his team-mates and partners, who have tried to cripple him and end his career. Why would he be laughing and smiling? Show the tension and hard feelings between these forced partnerships. Show some anxiety or nervousness. Make it realistic and true to life, damn it. Just imagine, if you can, Jim Crockett coming out back in the day and telling Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Wahoo McDaniel, Jimmy Valiant and Ivan Koloff, for example, that they were going to be a team and represent Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling in a match against Georgia Championship Wrestling. And imagine Ole Anderson, over in Georgia, telling Tommy Rich, Masked Superstar, Mr. Wrestling II, Buzz Sawyer and Dusty Rhodes the same thing. Do you think these men would stand there smiling and joking with each other in the ring? Do you think they’d be standing next to each other, without even a care in the world, cutting promos against the other team? They might team up for the match itself, but the build would have you wondering if they can be a team, who will turn on who and why were the men even agreeing to be partners. All of that is missing in today’s wrestling and in the build for Survivor Series. Heels and faces might have to work together on occasion, but there should be a real, legit reason besides “Team Spirit” and they shouldn’t be so non-chalant and happy about it. Just saying. And that’s my rambling rant for the day. Let’s go do some predictions for the Survivor Series.
WWE SURVIVOR SERIES – Thoughts and Predictions…
Brock Lesnar with Paul Heyman vs. Bill Goldberg.
The question isn’t who will win, but how much offense will Brock allow Goldberg to have before he delivers the F-5 and takes home the victory. I think we’ll see Brock sell a little bit for Goldberg and we mave even see Goldberg hit a spear and jackhammer at some point, but he’ll only do as much as Brock decides to allow. Then the “Beast” will take over, dominate and conquer before he decides to take it home and get the big pin.
Winner: Brock Lesnar w/ Paul Heyman
WWE Intercontinental champion The Miz vs. Sami Zayn
This one has me slightly torn. I can see Sami Zayn getting the push and capturing the IC title. Miz doesn’t need it to be over. But I can’t see the WWE having both the IC and United States titles on one show, aka RAW. We could have Zayn win the title and then announce that he’s switching brands and moving to Smackdown. We could also have Miz retain and then announce he’s moving to RAW due to his problems with Smackdown GM Daniel Bryan. My gut feeling here though is that we’ll see Miz retain the title. What he does after that is anyone’s guess, but at the end of the show on Sunday night, it will be Miz who will stand tall, take that trip to the pay window and talk out of the arena as the WWE Intercontinental Champion.
Winner and STILL Intercontinental Champion: The Miz w/ Maryse
WWE Cruiserweight champion Brian Kendrick vs. Kalisto: If Kalisto wins, Cruiserweight division shifts to Smackdown Live.
With the announcement of the new upcoming 205 Live series on Tuesday nights on the WWE Network, it’s pretty obvious that the Cruiserweights will be working on Tuesday nights immediately after the Smackdown taping ends. So does that mean that Kalisto will be the new Cruiserweight Champion at the end of the night? Not really. I think Kalisto will win the match and thus, the division will be moved to Tuesday nights and Smackdown Live. But look for Kendrick, who is doing in my opinion, a great job becoming a character and important part of the WWE roster, to keep the gold belt as his “last chance” continues. A blatant low blow or hitting the referee or whatever. Kendrick is DQ’ed and Kalisto wins the match, but the title doesn’t change hands. Thus Kalisto wins and the Cruiserweights move to Smackdown Live, but Kendrick remains the top dog and champion.
Winner (by DQ): Kalisto (Kendrick retains the title)
Raw vs. Smackdown Live Survivor Series Elimination Tag Matches:
Team Raw (WWE Universal champion Kevin Owens & Chris Jericho & Braun Strowman & Roman Reigns & Seth Rollins vs.) Team Smackdown Live (WWE World champion AJ Styles & Randy Orton & Dean Ambrose & Shane McMahon & Bray Wyatt)
I expect to see RAW team mascot James Ellsworth figure prominently in this match and cause the elimination of Braun Strowman. AJ Styles will either walk out on his team or be the first one eliminated, thus leading to a future encounter with the Undertaker. It’s a tough call and I don’t know how this will play out. My gut says that Team Smackdown Live will end up as the last ones standing though. I’ll say Ambrose and Wyatt as the two final men with Seth being the final man for RAW.
Winners: Team Smackdown Live…
Team Raw (WWE Raw Women’s champion Charlotte Flair & Nia Jax & Bayley & Sasha Banks & Alicia Fox) vs. Team Smackdown Live (WWE Smackdown Women’s champion Becky Lynch & Nikki Bella & Carmella & Alexa Bliss & Naomi with Coach Natalya)
This should also be a fun and good match to watch. I’m not even going to try and call eliminations though. It’ll end up being Bayley and Sasha Banks as the two final women, eliminating Becky in the end. And Charlotte, although eliminated early in the match, will claim all of the credit for “winning the match” for Team RAW.
Winners: Team RAW
Team Raw (WWE Raw Tag Team champions New Day & Shining Stars & Cesaro and Sheamus & The Club & Enzo and Big Cass) vs. Team Smackdown Live (WWE Smackdown Tag Team champions Heath Slater & Rhyno & The Hype Bros & American Alpha & The Usos & Breezango)
The Usos will remember that they’re heels and walk out on their team. The Club, who already know their role, will do the same to Team RAW. I can’t see the Shining Stars, the Hype Bros or Breezango lasting very long. The two championship teams, American Alpha and Enzo & Cass are the teams to watch here. I think American Alpha are going to be the shining stars (no pun intended) of the night and put on the performance of a lifetime. I’d have the two tag team championship teams of the New Day and Slater / Rhyno eliminate each other and allow the final two teams be Enzo & Cass versus American Alpha, thus giving us a taste of their earlier matches in NXT. And in the end, winning for Team Smackdown Live, it should be American Alpha standing tall at the end.
Winners: Team Smackdown
And there you go, with it ending up a big night for Smackdown Live as they win the tag teams match and Team RAW versus Team Smackdown match, as well as gaining the Cruiserweight division and retaining the Intercontinental Championship. RAW wins the Womens match and we have all sorts of craziness and hell to be paid as a result on RAW Monday night.
Have they announced a match for the pre-show yet? Whoever wrestles and competes in that match, the RAW guy will win. Just saying.
And now, with that, I’m going to sign off and go get ready for work. Thanks for reading. I really do appreciate it. Enjoy NXT, Survivor Series, RAW and Smackdown over the next few days. I’m Doug and I’m down and gone. And dat’ is all de people need to know. I’ll catch ya later.
