Barrett Building Thoughts…

Barrett Building Thoughts
October 31, 2017

Happy Halloween folks. Forgive me if I seem a little distracted, well more than usual. This post was going to be a somewhat rambling piece touching on anything and everything as I go through all the notes I’ve written to myself over the past week or so and “clean out my closet” if you will, but just before coming over here to write this, I saw something on Facebook and I’m physically getting sick just thinking about it. Like thieves in the night, the powers-that-be here in Laurinburg, our beloved City Council, went for it and now the former City Hall, aka The Barrett Building, is no more. I spoke a few days ago in one of my posts about some of the memories that old house holds for me. The many, many times that myself, Alex, Carl, Carson, Larry Wayne, Chad, Chris, Wakana, Theresa, Pat, Becky and so many others would be together, drink a little bit and just enjoy life and friendship. If those walls could talk… but I guess that’s not something to worry about now. So many memories in that house and so many good times. A few not-so-good times too, but those were few and far between and the good far outweighs the bad. Another piece of my life, my past, my youth, has been razed to the ground and for why? To satisfy the bloated egos of five drunk-with-power pinheads known as the current Laurinburg City Council, to build a new City Hall that no one wants, we do not need and this city can not afford. But they don’t care about the citizens of Laurinburg or helping this town improve, prosper and get better. They are like spoiled and pouty children who are determined to get what they want and damn the consequences and damn what everyone else might want. They have to win… period. And it’s so damn messed up. Would it have hurt anyone to wait for one more week to see how the voters are going to decide and if the three Council members running for re-election are even going to stay in office before making this drastic move? If they lose, the new City Hall project will be tabled and the money spent thus far on their ego-project will have been wasted and the beautiful and nearly hundred year old Barrett Building, a piece of Laurinburg history and a grand old house, will have been destroyed for no reason.

They know that they’re going to lose and are scared. It’s just that simple. And they’re so damn petty and spiteful that they won’t even wait to see what happens in the election, but instead are determined that even if they don’t get their new City Hall, they’ll just destroy the old one like children throwing a tantrum and stick their tongues out and go, “So there!”. I have said before that politics aside, I actually like most of the people on the City Council that I know, but I have to admit that my respect, even for those I speak to regularly, is quickly falling and has diminished a great deal because of these childish and cowardly tactics. Every time I drive down West Church Street now or go to pay my water bill or ride through the old down-town area, I’m going to see where the Barrett Building once stood, large and proud, and I’m going to think and remember. I’m going to remember Mary Jo and J.D. and Drew and Dee and Mr. Leak and I’m going to be mad, hurt, disgusted and sad that a big part of my life, my history, and the history of this town is forever gone, just to satisfy their petty egos. I’m going to be an adult about all of this and when I have to speak to or deal with any of these people in life, as I know I occasionally will, I’ll be polite, respectful and try to be the better man. It’s not as if they have shown any respect for the people of Laurinburg, but that’s on them. This was a low blow and wrong in so many ways, but what can we do? Just vote them out, make the best of the cards we’re played and move on. That’s the plan from here on in. I’ll get over it because that’s what I have to do. But that’s the future. For now, for today, I’ll just end this with a wrestling reference that I’m sure that most of my regular readers will get. To the people who orchestrated this whole scene with the tearing down of the Barrett Building and the big slap in the face to Laurinburg… Two words for you.

I’ll be back later on with my pre-scheduled ramblings and the whole “cleaning out my closet” thing. I’m pissed off, annoyed, hurt and just need to go riding for a bit. Until then my friends. Take care.

Wrestling Q&A – October 31, 2017

Tossing Salt Presents:
Wrestling Q&A
October 31, 2017

Are you ready to talk some wrestling? It’s Halloween. How you doing? The questions come from Facebook and mostly from the KoK. Let’s do this…

1. Who is the WWE Superstar of the Year?

Arguments can be made for many of the current WWE roster. AJ Styles has had, dare I say it, a phenomenal year. Kevin Owens has been great as always and no one can deny that Nia Jax has really started to come into her own. But the guy who stands out the most in WWE has to be current WWE Champion Jinder Mahal. The former 3MB member came back to WWE last year as essentially a jobber and with hard work, a strong work ethic and not more than a little being in the right place at the right time, has not only moved into the top of the card, but is and has been the WWE Champion for many months now with a solid hold on the title. Can anyone else in WWE even compare? I don’t think so.

2. Was Steve “Mongo” McMichael a good Horseman?

I’ll go with the words of the “Nature Boy” Ric Flair on this one. Mongo was not a great or even a good wrestler, but the former Super Bowl Champion was made to be a Horseman. He was an elite athlete who was legit one of the toughest men ever to step on to a football field and added a certain kind of credibility to the Horsemen in the real world. Mongo could party with the best of them, matching Flair drink for drink and embraced the lifestyle. He wasn’t good at arm locks and dropkicks, but he gave the Horsemen everything he had and personality and character-wise, he was everything that a Horseman should be. He didn’t have to be polished or a great technical wrestler. He wasn’t needed for that. If Flair and Arn and Benoit were happy with him, and they were the men who had to work with and depend on him, then how can I argue?

3. With Survivor Series around the corner what is your dream 4 or 5 man or woman team? Combine any stars from any era.

My dream team for the “Five Men” would be Team Captain Ric Flair, with partners Arn Anderson, Vader, Barry Windham and Sting. The best of WCW from the early 90’s with five men, in their primes, that could easily match up with anyone. As for my “Five Women” team, I’d have the Captain of the team being Sherri Martel, with a team of Ivory, Asuka, Charlotte Flair and Victoria. A mixture of the best woman of the 80’s and 90’s, two of the top ladies from the “Attitude Era” and the two best women in the WWE today.

4. Thoughts on the releases of Emma, Summer Rae and Darren Young from the WWE a few days ago?

I was surprised at the release of Emma who seemed to be just really starting to hit her prime and has been looking great for the past few weeks. I think she’ll do okay and will be able to get plenty of Indy dates and probably even a run with Impact, if that’s where she wants to go. Plus, she is still in a relationship with Zack Ryder so I think she’ll stay on the WWE radar and like Jinder Mahal, Shelton Benjamin and a few others, she’ll be back within the year. I just have a feeling. As for Summer Rae, it’s been forever since she’s been on TV or even worked a house show. She was never a strong personality or great in-ring worker that I could see although she did have a few moments. She’ll probably work a few conventions and signings and I can see a shoot interview in her future, but I can’t really see a big future for Summer remaining in wrestling. I think her future might be in TV or movies or even modeling. And Darren? He’s had plenty of opportunities, but while his in-ring work is good, he just couldn’t seem to catch on with the fans and seemed to be injury-prone. I think he’ll work groups like ROH and Evolve and maybe even make a few trips to Japan. For Young, he’s got a lot going for him and like Drew McIntyre, might be able to really go out now and find himself and take it to that next level. I think WWE will be watching to see what Young can do out on his own and if he takes the path that Drew and Cody have, he’ll be back within a couple of years, better than ever. He just needs to find that niche and his true role. He’ll be okay.

5. Jay Lethal versus John Cena. Who wins?

Whoever the booker wants to win, right? Duh! This would be a great match actually and could be really fun to watch. At this point in his career though, I think Cena would do the J-O-B and Lethal would be the man to get his arm raised in victory.

6. How big a pop would it get if all the WWE walkouts came back as a faction and invaded WWE led by the American Nightmare himself with the elite/Bullet Club by his side. Now that would get ratings.

It’d get ratings for about two weeks and then Vince would start tweaking things and the fans would quickly lose interest and it would bomb and be “The Invasion”, 2017 edition and the latest topic for “what the hell happened?”.

7. Here is something I never understood, if WWE release you, why should the wrestler have to wait 90 days to sign with ROH or Impact? I could understand if they requested it but if the company does it then I feel that they should be able to go elsewhere using there own name.

Ever since the Monday Night Wars, the WWE doesn’t want their talents jumping around and immediately showing up on the TV of their rivals so they put this clause in the contracts. WWE continues to pay the talent for the 90 days that they can’t appear on TV for a rival so it’s not like the former talent isn’t making any money and they can still work Indy dates and shows. They just can’t appear on TV or pay-per-views until the 90 days clause is up. It’s just good business by the WWE to protect their own product.

8. Thoughts on Baron Von Raschke?

A great talent from the 70’s and 80’s who was a great amateur wrestler and easy to under-estimate. He didn’t have that great athletic body, but could go in that ring and what a character. With the bald head, the sneer on his face and the exaggerated accent, he was a great heel who was so over the top, the fans hated his every move and he embraced it and ran with it into a great career. A good singles guy, but really looked best as a tag team wrestler forming great teams with guys like Paul Jones, Greg Valentine, Mad Dog Vachon and The Crusher. And when he locked in that claw, it was over… period. And outside of the ring, one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. A true gentleman and class act. Why he’s not in the WWE Hall of Fame, I’ll never know. He’s definitely deserving. And ‘dat is all de’ people need to know. ‘Nuff said!

And that’s it for now. Thanks for reading. Comments, thoughts and more questions needed and desired. Help a brother out. Until the next time, take care.

Halloween Survey – October 31, 2017

Halloween Holiday Survey
October 31, 2017

Happy Halloween my friends. Don’t forget to carve your turnip and buy some extra kit-kats. I’ve been listening to my friends at SMF Cyberspace and their special Halloween edition of the podcast. These guys are freakin’ crazy. Go listen. It’s up on the site. I’ll wait. And then, when you come back, I’ve got a great Halloween survey to do. And here it is. Enjoy!

What was your first halloween costume?

I was probably dressed up like an adorable baby because at the time, I was an adorable baby. The first I remember was with the coon skin cap and leather jacket with fringes and my musket. I was Daniel Boone.

What costume did you hate?

The year I did drag was pretty awful. My boobs were lopsided, my pantyhose had a run in them and my panties kept bunching up.

What are you going to be this year?

I haven’t really decided yet, but probably the fabulous “gay Uncle” for an amazing six-year old.

What was your most expensive costume?

Probably that drag queen year. I had to buy pantyhose and an outfit to wear, but in all honesty, I looked fabulous.

What was your favorite costume?

That year I dressed up like the Disco Inferno. Oh wait, that hasn’t happened yet. My bad!

What would you love to be?

About twenty pounds lighter, rich and very successful. Oh wait, what costume would I love to be? How about an otter.

When was the last time you went trick-or-treating?

For myself, probably about 40 years ago…

M&Ms or Skittles?

M&M’s (peanut) although I do also like to taste the rainbow too.

Berry or Tropical Flavors?

White, Milk, or Dark Chocolate?

Milk Chocolate

Sour or Sweet?

Chewy or Crunchy?

Cloddhoppers or Whoppers?

Chocolate-covered Raisins or Peanuts?

Starburst or Gobstoppers?

Bubble gum or lollipops?

Bubble Gum

What was the first horror movie you saw?

That I remember, was either “Gildrah the Three Headed Monster” or “The Gorgon”. Heck, it may have been Dracula, but I think it was one of the other two.

What was the last horror movie you saw?

Sister Act. It starred Whoopi Goldberg. ‘Nuff said!

Zombies or Aliens?

I personally prefer aliens. We need to build a damn wall.

Ghosts or Vampires?

I’m a big fan of vampires (the non-twinkling variety).

What are the goriest movies you have seen?

I watched the two movies that Chyna made with X-Pac and then I watched the Tammy Sytch movie. Far more scary than any monster movie could ever be.

Who is scarier: The Ring girl or The Exorcist girl?

Linda Blair in “The Exorcist”.

Who is Scarier: The Saw clown or the Chucky doll?

What did you like better: Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of The Dark?

What do you prefer: Resident Evil or Silent Hill?

Never saw either of them so I’ll go with Dark Shadows instead.

What was the scariest video game you have played?

Ms. Pac Man… She scared me.

What are you doing for Halloween this year?

Not sure, but probably going out with my brother and the mini-me trick or treating.

What is your biggest pet peeve about trick-or-treaters?

They keep eating all of my candy.

What was your favorite jack-o-lantern you helped carve?

That one that had the scary face and the candle inside that lit up the eyes and mouth and made it glow.

Have you ever been out on Devils Night?

Every night I go out is the Devil’s Night.

And there you go. Survey complete. Thank you for reading. Have a Happy and safe Halloween. Take care.

Opposing Views – October 30, 2017

Tossing Salt Presents:
Opposing Views
October 30, 2017

Greetings, salutations and all of that fun stuff. It’s Monday afternoon and I’m trying to decide if I have time enough to type up a very quick politically themed Q&A before I have to head out and go to work? I have to be there in 45 minutes and it’s about a five minute drive. Hmmmmm. If I write fast and don’t get too wordy, I think I can do this.

The questions below come from the Facebook page of a group called “Opposing Views”, a political page from out of L.A. that claims to have no agenda. They do obviously and it’s leaning majorly to the left, but that’s quite all right. They have the right to think as they please and I have the right to take their questions and give the answers I please, the correct ones. Are you ready to get political? It must be Monday. I’m keeping the answers short today. Let’s do this…

Yes or no question: Do you think Trump is racist?

Who is more corrupt: Trump or Hillary?

Do you support having “In God We Trust” signs in American schools?

Not really. Schools should be free from political and religious agendas and while I am cool if a person wants to pray or takes a religion-themed class as an alternate class, alongside the regular classes of reading, writing, math and history, I don’t think it should be a big deal and having signs promoting one religion over another is a bit too much.

Jeff Sessions wants a nationwide ban on illegal immigrant sanctuary cities. Are you for or against the policy?

Illegal immigrant sanctuary cities are already illegal or should be. They promote breaking and ignoring the laws of our nation so do I want a ban on people breaking the laws and promoting and encouraging others to break the law? Absolutely.

Do you appreciate the way Obama led America for eight years?

He made our nation weaker with his policies, led from behind, caused civil unrest, helped promote an entitlement society and made our nation the laughing stock of the world. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I’m glad he’s gone.

The number of Americans on welfare is dropping fast under Trump. Do you think Trump’s presidency is good for America’s economy?

The amount of people on welfare and getting food stamps is dropping. Illegal immigration is way down. Unemployment is down. The GNP is up at nearly 3% and the stock market is setting new records every day. I think it’s fair to say that so far, Trump has been good for the economy.

Do you think America is more respected with Trump as president than it was under Obama?

Under Obama, we were considered apologists and jokes to the rest of the world, all bark and no bite. With our current President, they may not like us, but they will respect us and no one wants to poke the bear. Trump has pride in America and American strength, something the former President was majorly lacking.

Would you like to see Elizabeth Warren run for president one day?

I would love to see her run since she’s ever a worst candidate than Hillary, with more lies and inconsistencies in her background. If she was to run, she would be exposed for the work that she is and it would assure whoever the opposing candidate an easy victory.

25 years ago, Ronald Phillips raped and murdered his girlfriend’s innocent 3-year-old daughter. This week, Ohio executed him.
Do you support the state’s use of the death penalty in his case?

Are you glad Trump is president instead of Hillary?

An Alabama lawmakers wants to make castration mandatory for child sex offenders. Do you think that’s a fair punishment?

I think it would have to be applied on a case-by-case basis but what the hell. Go for it. Whatever it takes to keep the kids safe, so be it.

Obama is back on the campaign trail again, and crowds are loving him more than ever. What do you think: Is Obama’s input good for America, or should he stay out of politics?

President Obama needs to show the same respect that was shown to him when he was elected by former President G.W. Bush. In other words, enjoy his retirement, live his life and stay the hell out of politics. Bush didn’t talk about Obama although he had every reason to when Obama blamed every bad thing on the former President. Obama needs to man up and do the same thing for President Trump.

Hillary Clinton inspired Americans everywhere as a First Lady, Senator, Secretary of State and presidential candidate. Do you think she’ll be remembered as a great political leader?

I think she’ll be remembered as a liar, a poor Presidential candidate who lost an election she had no business losing, by the “what difference does it make” comment about Benghazi and for her blame of everyone and everything but herself for her loss of the Presidential election of 2016. And hopefully, she’ll have the image of being the first former First Lady and former Secretary of State to be indicted and sent to prison. One can only hope.

And there you go. I’m through. Thoughts and comments are welcome. Thanks for reading and I’ll catch you on the flip side. Take care.

Wrestling Fact or Fiction – October 30, 2017

Tossing Salt Presents:
Wrestling Fact or Fiction
October 30, 2017

True or not true? That’s the question of the day, but around here, we have a different name for it. We call it “Fact or Fiction” and this is the wrestling edition for this week. As per the usual, the statements come from my friends at And the rest of it, that’s just me. Let’s do this.

You are excited for this year’s Survivor Series.

FACT: I get excited honestly for almost every pay-per-view event by the WWE because I know that they generally deliver and we always get at least one or two top-notch matches in the deal and this is no exception. I actually want to see Jinder versus Brock because I know that a good showing by Jinder where he holds his own against the “Beast” can make or break his career. The traditional matches with five on five are usually pretty good and I think I’m the only one excited for this match, but I think Miz versus Baron Corbin can end up being the dark horse match of the night. WWE usually delivers on the big shows and I’m hoping that this will be no exception.

2. Booking Finn Balor to lose to Kane on Raw following his win over AJ Styles was a bad decision.

FACT: While I’m a big fan of Kane and am interested to see where this goes with Finn and Kane, having Balor lose cleanly was just a dumb decision and bad move. It makes no sense and just kills the momentum that Finn got the previous night from his win over AJ Styles. I’m sure that WWE has their reasons, but I sure as hell can’t see what they are. Just a bad move that serves no purpose that I can see.

3. WWE has completely failed to present Asuka as special so far.

FICTION: So far, with the build towards her debut, she’s been given the red carpet treatment. The match, as everyone has noted, probably should have been more dominating for my beloved, but she won and won convincingly in the end so nothing was lost there. It’s too early to see if Vince and WWE Creative will screw this up (and they probably will), but so far, they’re on the right track in making Asuka seem larger than life.

4. Kurt Angle’s TLC match means we’ll see him in the ring again for WWE.

FACT: The genie is out of the bottle and I expect we’ll get a few more matches, albeit a very limited schedule, for our Olympic hero down the line. An eventual split and match with his “son” Jason Jordan and maybe a Wrestlemania payday at least. Kurt had the chance to show he can still go and grabbed the ball and ran with it. He’ll be doing it again.

5. WWE’s 2017 TLC PPV was a good show.

FACT: It was a solid show on paper and then changes were forced to be made and it turned out even better. The WWE delivered on all counts with the TLC event.

6. Who is the most underutilized member of the WWE roster?

Rusev is the first name that comes to mind. How can someone be so hot and dominant for so long and then, suddenly an after-thought if even that? He can go in the ring and he can cut a promo and has held his own against Cena and Orton many times. So what happened? And the other one that comes to mind is Luke Harper. He’s a big man who can wrestle, brawl and move around like a junior-heavyweight and fly. He can talk. He had it going on after the Wyatt Family split and then, for no reason, it just stopped. He deserves better.

And that’s all of this for now. I have to go do some work for my side (volunteer) job. I’ll catch ya’ll later. Thoughts, comments and any and all feedback is welcome. Thank you for reading. Until the next time…

Wrestling Q&A – October 29, 2017

Tossing Salt Presents:
Pro Wrestling Q&A
October 29, 2017

It’s early on a Sunday morning. Can you think of a better time to talk about the world’s greatest sport? Nope, me neither. It’s Wrestling Q&A time. Let’s do this…

You are given the chance to start your own wrestlng promotion? Who would you hire for your Booker? Your GM? Your announcers? Five men? Five women? Two Impact Wrestling stars and 2 WWE stars to join your roster.

My first picks for the spot of “booker” would be someone like Paul Heyman or Jim Cornette, but with Heyman under contract to WWE, he probably wouldn’t be available and Corny, while I love the man and would definitely want him on board as a consultant, his style is a bit old-school and might not work well in 2017, so let’s go with someone a little more modern as the head guy and creative force. How about Tommy Dreamer. He’s got the executive experience with WWE and ECW and if the current “House of Hardcore” product is any indication, knows how to book and work in today’s world with a mixture of nostalgia and old school mixed with modern styles and stories. My on-screen General Manager or authority figure would be more traditional and someone who is well-respected by both wrestlers and fans and could provide an instant credibility to the role. How about Bubba Ray Dudley. My announcers would be, if they’re available, Scott Hudson (of WCW fame) and Dutch Mantell on color. Five men that I’d have to secure for my product that are not currently under contract for either WWE or Impact are Carlito, Michael Youngblood, Cody Rhodes, Jack Swagger & CM Punk. Five women would be Tessa Blanchard, Lisa Marie Varon (Victoria), Cherry Bomb (from Canada), Saraya Knight (Paige’s Mom) and Awesome Kong. Two people from Impact Wrestling would be Chris Masters and DJ Zema Ion. And my WWE picks would be The Miz & Bray Wyatt.

Is it a coincidence that both Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett hit their lowest ebb whilst married to Karen?

It may or may not be coincidence, but we have no way of knowing and it really doesn’t matter. She may or may not be an enabler or part of the reason for these men having their issues, but in the end, the only blame or responsibility goes to Angle and Jarrett. They’re grown men and it’s their responsibility to deal with and no one elses.

How would you guys book Natalya vs Alexa Bliss ??? If you was the boss?

Natayla would use her size and strength and experience advantage and pretty much dominate, but get overconfident after several minutes of control in the match. And then Alexa would take advantage and use her sneakiness to make a comeback and in the end, I’d have a double-DQ to get a finish and keep both women strong as they brawl outside the ring and take out the ref and try to take out each other. And rematch later on down the line as they have “unfinished business”.

What’s your WWE Survivor Series 2017 Dream match with five men from RAW and five from Smackdown Live, current rosters?

From the current rosters and excluding the champions who have matches of their own scheduled, I’d go with a RAW team of The Shield and The Club (Roman, Seth, Dean, Anderson and Gallows) versus the Smackdown Live team of AJ Styles, Shinsuke and the New Day (AJ, Shinsuke, Big E, Kofi and Xavier).

Wouldn’t it be epic if the Smackdown versus Raw Survivor Series match turned out to be a War Games match?

Nope. That would be overkill and way too much. Save the War Games for a special event and allow it to shine on it’s own and not as part of something like the Survivor Series. Being part of the Series would cheapen what made War Ganes so special and original and it deserves it’s own night to stand and shine.

Which title vs title match are you most looking forward to.

Brock versus Jinder. I think Jinder is going to surprise us all and this is going to turn out to be a very good (and stiff) match.

Any wrestling promotion, any era. Who is your favorite wrestling stable?

I loved managers and their “families” and “Armies” back in the day. It was a big part of wrestling and added so much to the product, providing a mouth-piece and reason for wrestlers who may not have been great talkers and giving those who could talk, but maybe not really go in that ring an opportunity as well. I wish we’d see more of this now. My favorites back in the day were the “House of Humperdink”, led by the infamous Sir Oliver Humperdink, any group led by Gary Hart, the Midnight Express and Jim Cornette and Paul Jones’ “Army”. But my favorite then and now was and always will be that gathering of the very best, the elite of Flair, Anderson, Anderson, Blachard and Dillon. (Holds 4 fingers in the air). ‘Nuff said!

Who are the 5 most underrated wrestlers in WWE?

For right now, I’d go with Curtis Axel, Bo Dallas, Fandango, Tamina and Rusev.

And there you go. That’s it for now. Back later, my friends. Have a great morning and thank you for reading. Thoughts, comments and questions are welcome and appreciated. Until the next time, take care and have a great one.
