12 (Dougie) Days Of Christmas – Day 6: Hear ‘N Aid & Love…

12 (Dougie) Days Of Christmas – Day 6
Hear ‘N Aid & Love
December 14, 2017
DougMaynard.com

And here we are on Day 7 of the 12 (Dougie) Days of Christmas blog series and of course, I’m running a day behind and this is Day 6. Funny how that works out sometimes. But before it’s all said and done, I’ll get caught up and back on track (maybe). And if not, well it will still be complete and finished well before Christmas Day actually gets here. So what’s on the agenda for today and what are the topics of discussion. Let’s find the “Magic Bag” and find out. We have “Love” & “Hear ‘N Aid”m two very different topics to be sure. I think we’ll just leave this at two topics today. Let’s do this…

Hear ‘N Aid…

This was a one-time super group of metal and hard rock artists put together in 1985 by rocker Ronnie James Dio to help raise money for famine relief in Africa, much like USA For Africa and Band-Aid did before them. Actually, according to Wikipeida, the whole idea came about when it was noted that USA for Africa and Band-Aid and the other efforts lacked a metal or hard rock presence and Dio and friends decided to rectify that with a group of their own. The single released was called, “Stars” and peaked at # 26 on the UK Singles Chart in April, 1986. Artists who appeared for this effort included: Ted Nugent, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tommy Aldridge and members of Dio, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Quiet Riot, Dokken, Mötley Crüe, Twisted Sister, Queensrÿche, Blue Öyster Cult, Vanilla Fudge, Y&T, Rough Cutt, Giuffria, Journey, W.A.S.P. and Night Ranger as well as the parody band Spinal Tap. Lead vocals were shared between Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Kevin DuBrow, Eric Bloom, Geoff Tate, Dave Meniketti, Don Dokken and Paul Shortino. Vivian Campbell, Carlos Cavazo, Buck Dharma, Brad Gillis, Craig Goldy, George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Ojeda, and Neal Schon all added guitar solos. A video of the sessions and lots of outtakes was also recorded and released alongside the album “Stars” and over a million dollars was raised.

Here is the video for the single, “Stars”…

And next, we have “Love”.

“What is love?”, you ask. It’s the warmth a person feels towards another person, where they value and respect that other person and put the other person and their needs before their own. It’s caring and understanding and good will towards each other. It’s sacrifice and patience and being the best you can be for the sake of others as well as yourself. So many ways to describe the feeling and power that is love. Love is what makes the world go round.

And it’s also a drink. A mixed beverage to be specific and since I work in a liquor store, that’s what I’ll go with here. This is a sweet, made for sharing cocktail that was popular in the 1920’s. Here is the recipe, designed for two people.

Love…

Six tablespoons of Sloe Gin
1 1/2 tablespoon of Lemon Juice
1 egg white
1 teaspoon of grenadine

Take all the ingredients and shake well, mixing together with ice.

Strain into 2 cocktail glasses.

Garnish each with a pair of cherries.

And there you go… that’s love.

And with that, I’m through for today. I still have to do breakfast, shaving, and finish getting ready for work. Oh vey! I don’t want to work today. Back tonight or tomorrow with Day 7. Have a great one and be safe. Love you… mean it!

Music Fact or Fiction – December 9, 2017

Tossing Salt Presents:
Music Fact or Fiction
December 9, 2017
DougMaynard.com

Happy Holidays to everyone on this extremely cold and wet Saturday morning. Before I get started, I want to send out a big Happy Birthday shout-out to an amazing friend, Chris Boone, who is celebrating the Anniversary of his birth on this day. And also a big shout-out to the Fighting Scots of Scotland High School, who will be playing in the NC State 4-A Championship game this afternoon. Go Scots! Congratulations on an excellent season. Now bring that title home. And now, with the questions provided by my friends from 411mania.com/music, let’s do some of that Fact or Fiction stuff ya’ll love so much. Are you ready to get funky like a monkey? Then let’s do it…

1. “Shape of You” is deserving of its tremendous success.

FACT: It’s catchy and stays in your head after just a few listens. Ed Sheeran has every right to be proud. This is a big hit and well deserving of the success that it has had.

2. The judge in the Meek Mill case appears to be treating him unfairly.

FACT: The judge has been extra tough and it seems as if he’s got a personal issue in the case or against Meek and probably needs to watch himself and tone it down a bit to avoid the taint of appearing to be unfair and biased. But then again, if Meek Mill had followed the law and not violated his probation, he wouldn’t have anything to worry about, would he? Just saying.

3. Martin Shkreli’s Wu-Tang album will be released to the public within the next five years.

FACT: Once Shkerli gets his crap straightened out with the Government, one of two things will happen. He’ll be needed the cash flow a new album will produce and will work to ensure that the album is finally released OR the Government will seize ownership of the already-recorded album and realizing that it’s worthless to them, will sell it back to the Wu-Tang Clan and it will be released that way. But one way or the other, I think it will finally come out within the next few years.

4. Russell Simmons made the right decision in stepping down from Def Jam.

FACT: With the charges against him, Russell Simmons is damaged goods right now and trying to remain as the head of Def Jam right now would only harm the company and the people who work there. It doesn’t matter if the allegations against Simmons are true or not. In today’s politically correct climate, he’s guilty until proven innocent and if his company is to survive and remain strong, he can’t be the man in charge there anymore. It’s just that simple.

5. DMX’s version of “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” was pointless.

FACT: Pointless, dumb, stupid and a total waste of time, just like DMC is at this point really. I know that some people like him and more power to them, but I’ve never really cared for his music and this attempt at a Christmas song sure as hell didn’t help things.

6. A joint album from Beyonce and Jay-Z would be great.

FACT: I’m not a big fan of either of these two, but even I will admit that both are solid artists and have a large legion of fans who appreciate their music. I don’t really mind the music, but it’s the personal issues and their politics that turn me off mostly. But that being said, they both have talent and as good as they are as solo artists, they bring out the best in each other and their stuff together is usually really good. I won’t be listening or buying it, but that’s just me. I’m sure it will be awesome, sell several million copies and make their fans happy and that’s really all that matters, right?

And that’s all of that for now. Time to go to bed for a little while and then it’s back later for Day 2 of my blog series, “12 (Dougie) Days of Christmas”. So watch for that. Thanks for reading. Comments and thoughts are welcome and appreciated. And until the next time, take care and have a great one.

12 Dougie Days Of Christmas (Prologue)

@00 @ 1 1 a a meme

Tomorrow, it begins anew. It’s the “Twelve Dougie Days of Christmas”, exclusively here for your pleasure, at my site, DougMaynard.com. Are you excited? Are you ready? Are you wondering what the hell I’m talking about. Well, the answer should be yes for the first two questions and as for the last one, I’ll explain.

We already know what the twelve days of Christmas are, right? The whole song thing with ducks, geese, maids and five golden rings. Well, take that song and the whole Christmas spirit for which it embodies and mix it up with a recurring theme here at the site, the whole “(Insert number here) Days of Dougie” thing that I do occasionally, where I, for a certain period of time, write every day and it’s totally random. I draw the topics of discussion from a bag of scraps of paper I have called the “Magic Bag” and whatever comes out, that’s what I write out. No advance knowledge or warning – just here’s the topic and go. It’s always a challenge, usually entertaining and makes for a great writing exercise. That’s what we will be doing here, but with a bit of a Christmas theme and twist. It’s my Christmas present to you since I’m too cheap to spring for cards or anything else. And it’s a present to myself as well since it gives me an opportunity to cut loose and just see what happens. Any topic is possible and no limits or political correctness allowed. It’s just a free as a bird concept and we’re going to run with it.

So starting tomorrow, Wednesday, December 6, 2017 and running for the next twelve days, until December 17, 2017, be sure to watch your Facebook timeline or Twitter Feed for the “12 Dougie Days Of Christmas”. And if you’re not following me on Twitter, you should be at @doug28352. I’ll follow back. Just saying.
But anyhow, it’s coming and just like Santa Claus, it’ll be bringing all sorts of Christmas goodies for your enjoyment… I hope. You’ve been warned. Now sit back and enjoy the ride.

And now, work beckons so I must depart. Keep watching and thanks to everyone who comes to and reads the site for your support. Have a very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and all of that. I’ll catch you later.

Music Fact or Fiction – December 2, 2017

Tossing Salt Presents:
Music Fact or Fiction
December 2, 2017
DougMaynard.com

I should be getting ready for work right now. I’m not. There is plenty of time for that, but right now, I have to take a trip into the world of pop culture and more pointedly, the world of Music Fact or Fiction. The questions, per the usual, come from my friends at 411mania.com/music. The answers and comments that follow, that’s all me. Let’s do this…

1. Jay-Z is a lock to win Record of the Year at the Grammys.

FICTION: Jay-Z may or may not win this award, but “Record of the Year” is always one of those that doesn’t always go as predicted. Kendrick Lamar and Bruno Mars are both there in contention as well and they have some good stuff out right now. I think this category is pretty much an open field this year.

2. You’re mostly pleased with this year’s Grammy nominations.

FACT: I really don’t pay much attention to the Grammy’ Awards and honestly, could care less about who is nominated for what, but looking over the list of nominations, I don’t see anything outrageously bad listed. Alice Cooper is snubbed, but that’s to be expected. Other than that, no big surprises and I’m okay with it.

3. Fergie is a good choice to host The Four.

FACT: She’s popular, charismatic and as good as anyone else and better than most so why the hell not. Now, what is “The Four”? Doesn’t matter. I probably won’t be watching anyhow.

4. Load and Reload are underrated Metallica albums.

FACT: Both albums are good in my opinion and I liked them. I know that they’re not the usual hard metal sound that most people have come to expect from Metallica and I don’t care. Bands change and evolve as time passes and that’s exactly what happened here. “Load” has some good tracks such as “Until It Sleeps” and “Bleeding Me” and there are songs like “The Memory Remains” and “Unforgiven II” on “Reload”. Most of the tracks on both of the albums are good, solid songs with a good sound and great lyrics. No complaints here about either.

5. Bruno Mars’ first live TV special will be worth watching

FACT: If I happen to be home and watching TV, I’ll try to watch it. Bruno has grown on me over the years and he’s entertaining and charismatic and from all I’ve heard, puts on a great live show so I’m expecting that anything else he does, such as this, will go above and beyond expectations as well. It should be good.

6. A Tribe Called Quest should have been nominated for a Grammy.

FACT: They’re on the comeback trail and have put out some good stuff this past year and yeah, probably are deserving of a Grammy nomination, but hell, Alice never gets any nominations and he’s doing okay. And how often do Hank Jr. or Kid Rock or Shooter get nominated for anything and their stuff is usually way better than most of the mainstream crap out there today. Same for Struggle, Yelawolf and so many others. ATCQ deserves more respect, but they’ll be okay regardless.

And there you go. I’m through for now. Time to go get myself moving and grab some breakfast before I go sell a lot of liquor for the next eleven hours at the ABC. Thanks for reading. Thoughts and comments are welcome and appreciated. Until the next time, take care…

Music Fact or Fiction – November 19, 2017

Tossing Salt Presents:
Music Fact or Fiction
November 19, 2017
DougMaynard.com

Are you ready to discuss music and pop culture? Are you ready to get down and dirty and do that “Fact or Fiction” thing, the musical chairs version? If you said “Yes”, then you’re the only one. I’m ready to go back to bed instead. But what the hell. I’m awake so let’s get this mother put to bed. It’s “Music Fact or Fiction”. The statements below come from my good close personal friends over at 411mania.com/music. And the opinions that follow, that’s just little ol’ me. Let’s do this…

1.The sexual harassment claims against Mariah Carey seem unbelievable.

FICTION: They’re probably not true, but in the past few weeks, everyone in Hollywood and / or politics has been accused of sexual harassment of some way, shape or form and is it really too hard to believe that someone like Carey, who is well known to take that whole “Diva” role to the extreme and be very controlling, might be guilty of the same thing. It’s not about sex, but about control and power and while I personally can’t see Carey being the predator and harassing her male employees, it’s not to say it couldn’t happen and may not be true. These particular charges seem fake because they’re part of a lawsuit about allegedly owed money, but that’s not to say they can’t be true. I just don’t think they are in this particular situation.

2. Eminem’s “Walk on Water” is a disappointing return track.

FACT: It’s not a bad song and it’s slowly growing on me, but when one thinks of Eminem and time to debut some new tracks and music, one thinks of songs that are powerful and unique and vintage Eminem, such as “Rap God” or something of that nature. This one seems more like filler, a song manufactured to get a little radio airplay with Beyonce filling in for Rihanna, than anything else. It’s not a bad song, but it’s not what we tend to expect from Eminem either.

3. You’re interested in Chris Martin’s guest spot on Modern Family.

FICTION: I don’t know who Chis Martin is and don’t watch Modern Family (or hardly any television for that matter) so am I interested? Not a damn bit!

4. It’s the right time for Ozzy Osbourne to hold a farewell tour.

FACT: Old rock stars never truly retire, but if Ozzy feels up to it, he probably should make that last big tour and give the fans one more time to see a full fledged Ozzy Osbourne show in classic Ozzy style. It’d be good publicity, lots of money and probably fun for Ozzy to get that one last big run in front of a few million fans. Then he can just relax, make great music at his leisure and enjoy his status as a true legend and icon and senior representative of the world of rock. Do it Ozzy… I’d love to see him one more time.

5. Kanye West will make his music comeback next year.

FACT: I didn’t even realize that he was gone, but it’s Kayne so what do I care anyhow, right? If he can make some decent music and avoid being the total publicity hound and ass that he’s been in the past, thee get to work, come on back and do so. And if he is still the ego-maniac and piece of crap that tried to ruin the moments for Taylor Swift and Beck, then stay wherever he has been and rot. I really could care less either way.

6. You don’t believe that Taylor Swift’s “Dress” is about Ed Sheeran.

FACT: It may be or may not be, but to be honest, it’s not a bid deal one way or the other. He says it’s not about him and since he should know, we’ll go with that. Sounds good to me.

And that’s all of this for today. Comments, thoughts and any and all feedback is welcome. Thanks for reading. I’m going back to bed now. Until the next time, take care and be safe. Have a great one.
