Before I get started with this mid-day edition of a Day of Dougie, I want to send out my condolences and prayers to the family and fans of Kris Kristofferson, the legendary songwriter, singer, actor, and inspiration, who passed away Saturday. Kris wrote hit songs, earned an Oscar nomination, served in the Navy, was a Rhodes Scholar, and was just, from all indications, a really cool dude. This one hurts. But then again, as Kris said in one of his amazing songs…

And the daylight grew heavy with thunder
the smell of the rain on the wind
ain’t it just like a human
here comes that rainbow again

Rest in Peace, Kris Kristofferson. 1936-2024. You were one of the best.

And now, back to the business at hand and that’s a Day of Dougie. You know the routine by now. I reach into the Magic Bag and pull out three Topics of Discussion. And then, I write. No chance for preparation or advance warning. It’s just here is the subject and go. Sometimes, it turns out predictable and well. Other times, it will go in a direction that no one could have seen coming. That’s what makes it so fun. Let’s get the bag and get to work, shall we?

And the Topics of Discussion for today are, Budweiser Frogs, Caveman, and The Sign. Okay, this is going to be one of those weird ones, but I’ll try my best to come up with something and make it interesting. rolls eyes So are you ready? Let’s do this.

Budweiser Frogs

I remember this one. The frogs croaking out Bud Weis Er. It was marketing genius and sticks in the head. I wonder how they selected which frogs would do the commercials, but I guess Kermit would have cost too much, and Jeremiah, we all know that he was all about the wine. It was still so damn cool. Somewhere in this house, since I never throw anything away, is a t-shirt that I bought while I lived in Wilmington, NC back in 96-97, of the three frogs, saying Bud-Weis-Er on the front, and the logo, Budweiser, King of Beers, on the back. I know that Bud Light is supposed to be all ‘woke’ now and evil. There was, and probably is, a boycott going on against the beer, but I don’t care. It was my brand back in the day and if someone offered me a cold one right now, I wouldn’t say no. But back to the frogs. They were hella cool. ‘Nuff said. I wonder if I can go find that shirt? If I can find it, I’ll wear it. Damn straight, I will.

Caveman

Two images pop into my head when I see that word. One would be the Geico commercials featuring the fuzzy dudes and the phrase, ‘So simple, even a caveman can do it!’. I loved those commercials, and they even tried to do a television show based on the caveman characters from that show. It didn’t last long.

The other caveman is the movie, Caveman, starring Ringo Starr. Yes, the coolest of the Beatles did a movie about cavemen where he played, you guessed it, a caveman. The movie wasn’t good, but Ringo did meet his future, and current wife, Barbara Bach, who was his co-star, while making that movie. He got clean and sober after making that movie. And it’s Ringo, so even the bad stuff is good since he’s graced it with his Beatleness. Paul is the cute one and John was the one married to the crazy Jap, but Ringo was always the cool one. And he played a caveman in a movie with subtitles. Only Ringo. And that’s one of the many reasons we love the dude.

The Sign

I’ve always heard that when stupid people are being stupid, you can tell them that here’s your sign. And signs are everywhere. Tesla even made a song about it, remaking an old Five Man Electrical Band classic. We depend on signs to tell us where to go, what to do, how fast to drive when places are opened and closed, and so many other things. When a person starts to change, there are signs. It’s a very busy word that can mean so many things. I could go into all of that, but I’m getting restless. Let’s just play a video of Tesla and their cover of the song, Signs. Works for me.

And there you go. My thanks for sticking around for all of this. I do appreciate it. I also appreciate any comments, thoughts, questions, or suggestions for new topics to add to the Magic Bag. Be sure to like, share, and subscribe to the site. I’m in shock at some of the great numbers that this site gets. It’s just a place for me to write, attempt to be creative, and avoid paying high costs for therapy. But the numbers don’t lie and a lot of people are here regularly and reading this stuff. Your check is in the mail. Trust me! But seriously, I do it for you. And for my mental health, but mainly, for you. Thank you.

And I’m closing up shop now. Until the next time, take care and be good, my friends. Make every day a Day of Dougie and your world will be a much better place. Just like the Smurf Village, but without that annoying hussy, Smurfette. She got on my nerves so badly. But that’s a discussion for another day. I’ll see you later.
