Welcome to the show. It’s the only pro wrestling Q&A that matters. You have questions and I have answers. It’s the Ultimate Wrestling Q&A. I’m Doug, your party host and Guiding Light. Are you ready? Let’s do this.
Have you seen TNA recently? They’ve been doing a storyline between Mustafa Ali and Santana, around his alcohol addiction, and I was wondering whether this should be something wrestling should stay away from or use more in storylines.
I’m torn about this one. Stories based on reality make for the best storylines, but some topics, like drug abuse, alcoholism, sexual abuse, and criminal behavior, tend to be too touchy for a wrestling storyline. I guess if both Ali and Santana are comfortable with it, I can’t really object. It’s not what I would like or support, though, and I’m sure alternatives could be found.
Who is the most fun wrestler to watch right now? Someone who makes you smile?
Ron Killings, aka R-Truth. No matter what role Truth is given, you know that there will be a legit LOL moment or two.
Who wins a world title in AEW first out of Fletcher, Darby, Takeshita, and Willow Nightingale?
Of the four listed, I think Willow has the best chance. Most likely, it will just be the ROH title, but that’s better than nothing.
Any big fails you thought would be can’t-miss prospects that for whatever reason just didn’t land?
Sean O’Haire. Yes, we’re going back a ways, but O’Haire had it all. A good talker, a great look, and that “it” factor. He was definitely on the rise when he came to WWE as the “Devil’s Advocate”, but the backstage politics and his affiliation with Roddy Piper, plus some alleged personal issues, took their toll, and he ended up losing Vince’s support, leading to his termination from the WWE. O’Haire had it all and should have been a huge star, but alas, that wasn’t in the cards.
Should Kyle Fletcher take the TNT off Daniel Garcia? Is he too big for that title now? Or could he elevate it to Continental Title caliber?
Fletcher is, in my opinion, the flavor of the month right now. He might take the belt off Garcia, but I don’t think so. As for elevating the belt, between the two titles, the TNT Championship and the Continental Championship, there is no elevation needed. The TNT Championship is, in my opinion, the more prestigious of the two titles.
Would you ever consider doing regular non-wrestling content?
The wrestling stuff is my main interest here at the site, but I also regularly do a Q&A from Twitter called The Ultimate X Q&A, plus I do writing features called Day of Dougie. And I have plans for regular items for the site that have nothing at all to do with wrestling. So while wrestling content is a big part of my site, DougMaynard.com, it’s just a piece of the puzzle and there will always be plenty of other stuff as well.
What’s your Mount Rushmore of commentary teams? And apart from Joe Tessatore, has the standard of commentary dipped in recent times?
My Rushmore of commentary teams would be Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler, Vince McMahon & Jesse Ventura, Bob Caudle & David Crockett, and finally, Bobby Heenan & Gorilla Monsoon. And yeah, the standards for commentators have declined. After all, Excalibur has a job.
Does Rey get a final properly featured world title program?
Rey, being Rey Mysterio, has had a great career. But to be honest, I doubt that we’ll see any more World Championships in his future. Maybe a tag team title or two, but not any singles gold.
Do you think, if they changed it so that if you escape the cage you forfeit the match, it would improve them?
That’s an interesting stipulation to add to cage matches but to be honest, I like it. It would perk things up a bit.
Why do people insist there are too many titles, as opposed to giving each title its own concrete identity and style of wrestling/storyline? Ex. International is defended internationally, TNT is the main storyline, and Continental is for legendary or older wrestlers/feuds.
Giving each title an identity, storylines, and the proper build takes time, and there is only just so much time available for each wrestling promotion. Trying to squeeze every title into the show would cheapen each belt, its champion, and what it allegedly stands for. Less is more. Remember that.
And there you go. My thanks for reading. Comments, thoughts, and questions are welcome and appreciated. Be sure to like, share, and subscribe. And with that, let’s wrap it up. Take care and be well, my friends. Watch out for foreign objects, and I’ll see you at the matches.
