Tossing Salt Presents:
April 20, 2017
It’s time to delve into the old mailbag, sort of, and do a little Q&A about the world’s greatest sport, the true “King of Sports”, right after Naked Twister, the world of Professional Wrestling. You’ve got questions and I’ve got answers. I’m Doug and I wish I had some chinese food right now. Let’s do this…
If Vince McMahon was to give you the responsibility of creating three shows / events for the WWE Network, what would they be?
Three ideas for the Network? First, I’d have a “Where Are They Now” program created. Pick a producer and give him a team and each week, they could do a quick thirty minute or so piece about some former star or talent, updating fans to that man or woman’s current status. There are so many stars from the old territory days out there, such as Mr. Wrestling II, Brett Wayne Sawyer, Paul Jones, Rocky Johnson, The Mulkeys. It’d be relatively cheap and easy to produce and could be a big hit with the older fans.
Secondly, I’d have a “Night of Legends” or “Flashback” live event show on the Network consisting of wrestlers from the past in matches. There are so many “Legends Shows” out there, but imagine one in a sold out arena, live on the WWE Network with WWE production values. Have people like Bob Caudle, Lance Russell, Tony Schiavone, Marc Lourence, etc, brought in to call the matches and announce with Jim Ross as obviously the lead announcer. This could be done as another edition to Wrestlemania week when there are hundreds of old-time stars available to use in the area for other events anyways or it could be used as part of the SummerSlam event, providing a third event to go along with SummerSlam and NXT Takeover. Think of WCW Slamboree and some of the great legends matches they put on, like Dory Funk versus Nick Bockwinkle or Baron Von Raschke & Ivan Koloff versus Thunderbolt Patterson and Brad Armstrong (substituting for his father, Bob). Now think of a whole show of dream matches such as these. It would work.
Bring back the “Legends House, but make it a mix of both men and women. It was one of my favorite early WWE Network shows and I think it could be a big part of the Network again with the right casting and promotion.
(The following questions come from the Facebook page of Eric Nelson, the owner / Promoter of Stranglehold Championship Wrestling.)
Name 6 wrestlers you’d love to party with if you could.
Personally, I am not much of a partier, but the six wrestlers I would love to sit down with, meet, talk to, and pick their brains are Ole Anderson, Harley Race, Jim Cornette, Ivory, the late, great Blackjack Mulligan and Paul Heyman. Think of the knowledge one could gain from any of these people.
Book your dream show, start to finish.
No specific guidelines were given to this match so I’m assuming that it’s anyone from any time period wrestling anyone else and the only restrictions are the imagination. So with that in mind, and with the help of time travel obviously because there would be no other way to promote and put this show together, it would go like this…
Triple Threat Rules
NWA World Champion Harley Race versus WCW World Champion Ric Flair versus WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan
“King versus King”
Ernie “The Cat” Ladd versus Jerry “The King” Lawler
World Tag Team Championship Match
The Midnight Express (Lane & Eaton) w/ Jim Cornette versus Rick Steamboat & Jay Youngblood
War Games Match
The Dangerous Alliance (Steve Austin, RIck Rude, Larry Zbyszko, Arn Anderson) w/ Paul Heyman versus Sting, Dusty Rhodes, The Ultimate Warrior and Dick Murdoch
William Regal versus Daniel Bryan
Eight-Woman Tag Match – Special Referee: Madusa
Ivory, Molly Holly, Trish and Lita versus Charlotte, Sasha Banks, Becky Lynch and Bayley
The Road Warriors and Demolition versus KRONIK & The Powers of Pain
Curt Hennig & Curtis Axel versus Blackjack Mulligan & Barry Windham versus Ted DiBiase & Ted DiBiase Jr. versus Bob Orton Jr. & Randy Orton
Harlem Heat w/ Sherri Martel versus Triple H & Shawn Michaels w/ Chyna
“Boogie Woogie Man” Jimmy Valiant versus Paul Jones
And there you go… card subject to change.
You are given two folders. In one folder is WCW and the other is ECW. Open one folder and you are resurrecting one of them. Which will you choose?
Nothing against ECW, but I’m a WCW guy all the way so it’d be time to open that folder and take that trip to Hot-Lanta. WCW would live again!
You can bring back 4 wrestlers from the dead. Who do you choose?
Blackjack Mulligan because he was one of my favorites as a child, an incredible man and a true iconic legend. The second would be Owen Hart because the way he died was so stupid and tragic. And the final two would be Chris Benoit and his wife, Nancy, aka Woman. That tragic weekend when Benoit snapped and murdered Nancy, murdered their son, etc. So much was lost that weekend and I’m not just talking about two innocent lives or the legacy inside the ring that Chris and Nancy both left behind, now ignored and forgotten. For so many of us, wrestling lost it’s “suspension of belief” factor and became way too real. It’s still the world’s greatest sport and the world’s best entertainment, but it’s just not the same anymore. Something was lost when the Benoits’ died and we have never been able to get it back. I liked it better before. So those are my picks.
And that’s all for now. I wish I had more questions to answer, but time is scarce and so are good questions. If you have any that I can use and answer, please send them to me at Doug28352@yahoo.com or at Twitter at @doug28352. Or message me at Facebook at facebook.com/saltpalace. I have to go now. It’s time to go to St. Andrews and feed the ducks. Thanks for reading and I’ll catch you on the flip side.
