Tossing Salt Presents:
NXT Takeover: Brooklyn 2017 Thoughts and Predictions
August 18, 2017
Coming up on this Saturday night is NXT’s biggest event of the summer, NXT Takeover: Brooklyn. The build for this show has been awesome so far, especially the build for the NXT Championship Match between Bobby Roode and Drew McIntyre and the historical match between my new beloved, Asuka, who has just broken the 502 days record of “Rockin’ Robin”m thus establishing herself as the longest running champion in the WWE modern era, defending her NXT Women’s Championship against Ember Moon. I think that NXT is out to steal the show from their peers in the WWE and SummerSlam. This show is going to rock. So are you ready for predictions? Let’s do it!
Bobby Roode (c) vs. Drew McIntyre
This match is going to be good and could easily go either way. I guess it’s all up to what is in the future plans for the “Glorious One” and the former “Chosen One” as to who walks out with the NXT Championship at the end of the night. Roode is definitely ready to move up to the main roster, but is that in the plans just yet? The main roster of RAW and Smackdown Live are already bloated with talent that isn’t really being used wisely. I don’t think that would be the case with Roode and he’d move almost immediately into a top mid-card position, but it’s still a possibility. And Drew? All I can say is welcome home! I was a Drew fan in the beginning, during the time with 3MC and I still am now. No matter who wins this match, I’m happy because both men are so damn good. Hard call here, but I think I’m going to go with Drew on this one. I can see WWE wanting to get Bobby Roode in the mix on the main roster leading up to Wrestlemania and better to start sooner rather than later. This should be a match for the ages, but I don’t think things will be especially glorious for Roode on Saturday.
Winner and NEW NXT Champion: Drew McIntyre
NXT Women’s Championship
Asuka (c) vs. Ember Moon
Congratulations to Asuka who, as I mentioned earlier, is now the longest reigning champion in the WWE modern era. The only people in WWE history who have held titles for longer lengths of time are Hulk Hogan, Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales and Bob Backlund, all of who are from the time frame where titles didn’t change hands often and their records will probably never be broken. But Asuka has done it and is still the NXT Women’s Champion. The question here is what’s next? Does she beat and retain against Moon at Takeover or does she drop the belt and move up to the main roster of WWE to challenge either Alexa or Naomi? Asuka is so good and talented in that ring and I would love to see her in matches against Charlotte or Natayla. How about Asuka versus Ronda Rousey at Wrestlemania? That would totally rock. I think her time at NXT is nearing the end, but I just don’t see Ember Moon as the woman to take her down. I would go with either a returning Paige doing the honors or more likely, having Asuka give up the title to move to the main roster and a tournament be held to determine the next NXT Women’s Champion. Ember is tough, but she’s not beating Asuka for the title. Not now and not never.
Winner and STILL NXT Women’s Champion: Asuka
NXT Tag Team Championship
The Authors of Pain (Akam and Rezar) (c) with Paul Ellering vs. Sanity (Alexander Wolfe and Killian Dain) with Eric Young and Nikki Cross
I expect this to be one hell of a brawl and chaos to reign supreme. Sanity is so good, but the AOP have Paul Ellering at their side and I think that’s the difference maker. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see Ellering’s daughter, Rachel, come out and get involved to counter the presence of Nikki Cross. That could be a fun match to see somewhere down the road, don’t you think. As for this match, a classic Pier Six Brawl, but in the end, the AOP retain the titles.
Winners and STILL NXT Tag Team Champions: The Authors of Pain w/ Paul Ellering
Aleister Black vs. Hideo Itami
Another match that should be off the charts and will try to steal the show. Black is so damn good and Itami is magic and poetry in motion. I love to watch him do his thing in that ring. I haven’t been keeping up with the story between these guys and honestly, I’m not even sure who’s the face and who’s the heel here, but what I do know is that both men can go and put out an amazing match. For no reason really, I think Itami will get the win here. Don’t know why, but I just think he will.
Winner: Hideo Itami
Johnny Gargano vs. Andrade Almas (with Zelina Vega)
And finally, we have Gargano versus Almas. Another match with two talented guys going out there to steal the show. Andrade has been a particular favorite of mine since he made his debut last year and with the addition of Vega to his act, he just gets more and more entertaining. And Gargano, the ultimate underdog, trying so hard to take that step and move to the next level. I expect a good match and for Almas to dominate for most of the match, but in the end, the cockiness and shenanigans by Almas and Vega will backfire. Look for Gargano to take home the win here.
Winner: Johnny Gargano
And there you go with how I expect NXT Takeover: Brooklyn to go down on Saturday night. I’ll be back later with predictions and thoughts for SummerSlam. Thank you for reading. Comments, thoughts and any feedback is welcome and appreciated. Until the next time, take care.
