Tossing Salt Presents:
Wrestling Fact or Fiction
December 31, 2017
Happy New Year’s Eve. 2017 is nearly over and I, for one am ready for the new year to begin. But before we break out the liquor bottles and start making promises about a “New Me” and “fresh start” and all of that, the whole “New Year resolutions” type stuff, we still have the rest of today to get through. For me, that means relaxing, lots of writing, some laundry and maybe making some chili beans. I also may go hit up the “Meet Me” and try to score. Yeah, a busy day ahead, but we’re starting off with something nice and easy. How about a little “Fact or Fiction”, wrestling style. Sounds like a plan, right? So what are we waiting for? The questions I’m commenting on come from my good, close personal friends over at 411mania.com/wrestling. And the rest of it? That’s just this ol’ boy right here. Let’s do this…
1. Rey Mysterio will return to WWE in some capacity to WWE in 2018.
FACT: He’s making noise about wanting to come back and the WWE loves nostalgia acts, especially if it’s one that can help bring in the Latino audience and Rey can certainly do that. It might just be a guest appearance at the Royal Rumble to begin with and then some spot shows, but I’ve got a feeling that we’ll be seeing Rey back in the WWE fold sooner rather than later. He’s not what he was in the ring, but he’s got name recognition and a legacy and using Rey over at the 205 Live show and in a limited capacity could help get the division over more and attract more long time fans who may have drifted away. Rey has never been one of my personal favorites, but fans love him and he’s a talented performer. He should be in the WWE for the twilight of his career to end it right and I think that’s exactly what will happen.
2. Dolph Ziggler relinquishing the US Title “and walking away” will result in a complete turn around for his career when he returns.
FICTION: It will catch fire when he returns for a few weeks and then fizzle out just like everything else that Dolph does. The man is a damn good worker and should be hotter than he is, but every gimmick and story he’s put into goes the same way, with a bright spark and then it dies and no one cares. It’s time for Dolph to either move to a position at the announce table or behind the scenes for a year or so or else just go the Cody / Drew McIntyre / Hardy direction and leave WWE for a while to get that mojo back. So far as WWE goes right now, Dolph is just there… nothing more.
3. Who is your pick, as of today, to win the men’s Royal Rumble?
The natural and most obvious choices are obviously Roman Reigns or maybe Shinsuke Nakamura, but I’d like to see some surprises instead. I think it’s pretty obvious that we’re getting Roman versus Brock at Wrestlemania and thus, Roman doesn’t need the Rumble match. Nakamura versus AJ would be great to see and seems to be the way that WWE is headed, but “The Artist” just doesn’t do it for me in his current WWE run. I’d love to see Dolph as the “surprise” and win it, but I doubt that would happen. Kevin Owens winning would be great story-wise because with the Shane vendetta going on, it would be good to watch Shane get frustrated and try to screw Owens out of his spot, just to see Kevin hold on. Daniel Bryan as a surprise would be great to see, as would having the Miz win and get his rightful and well deserved dues. So many things that I’d love to see, but none of it will happen. I’ll go with Shinsuke or Randy Orton winning in the end. I hope I’m wrong, but we’ll see.
4. The Nationwide Arena has announced a Fatal Five-Way WWE Championship match for WWE Fastlane on March 11th, 2018 featuring AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton vs. Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn; this means that a Raw star will win the Royal Rumble.
FICTION: All it means is that WWE Fastlane will have a Fatal Five-Way match at Fastlane. As WWE has shown in the past, anything can happen and what is advertised doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what will happen. I think we’ll see a Smackdown star win the Rumble and go on to face AJ Styles, but this match and show doesn’t make any difference to the determination of what brand’s superstar will win.
5. The Undertaker WILL NOT return to wrestle for WWE in 2018.
FACT: The Undertaker had the perfect send-off for his gimmick and career. It should remain that way and he should not be in the ring, as an active wrestler again… ever. ‘Nuff said!
6. Who is your pick, as of today, to win the women’s Royal Rumble?
I’d love to see Victoria come back and score the upset, getting the win at the Rumble and then going on to win at Wrestlemania. I’d also love to see Mickie James do win and finally get that record setting 7th Women’s Championship. That would be so cool. But that’s all just dreams and fantasy. Barring a Ronda Rousey surprise, the best person to win and the person I think will win at the Rumble will and should be Asuka.
And there you go. Thanks for reading. Comments and thoughts are welcome and appreciated. Let me know what you think. Until the next time, stay safe and have a great one. Happy New Year, my friends.
