Tossing Salt Presents:
WWE SummerSlam 2018
Thoughts & Predictions
August 18, 2018
Coming up this Sunday night from the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, it’s WWE SummerSlam, the biggest party of the summer and the WWE’s second biggest card of the year. It’s a large and loaded card packed from top to bottom with some really stacked and exciting matches. Let’s break out the crystal ball and do the Sister Cleo thing as it’s prediction time. Let’s get busy and get ‘er done…
Rusev & Lana vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega
I am really glad to see these four get a match at SummerSlam. I don’t particularly care that it’s on the Kickoff Show, but it’s still on the big event so I won’t complain much. Three out of the four are really good wrestlers and can really go and the other, well she looks damn good and who doesn’t like Lana Crush! Look for a so-so match that will probably be rushed and only a fraction of what these folks are capable of. And look for Aiden English, the scorned former partner and singer of songs, to get involved to “help out” his partner and fellow supporters of Rusev Day. It’ll backfire of course and Almas and Vega will take advantage and walk out with the victory.
Winners: Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega
WWE Raw Tag Team Championship Match
The B-Team (c) versus The Revival
Bo and Axel’s first PPV defense of their newly won RAW Tag Team Titles and it’s on the Kickoff Show. That’s very un-bolievable and totally unfair to the champs in my opinion. I expect a quick and short match, again due to the time constraints of having thirteen matches on one show, and I expect to see Dawson and Wilder dominate most of the match. But I also expect that the two third generation superstars that once worked for the Miz have a surprise or two up their sleeves as well. Will this be the night that they are “Woken” or even become “Fireflies”? Maybe they’ll just have luck on their sides once more, but it’s too soon to take the belts off of Curtis and Bo. The B-Team are catching on and getting a following and need more time to really let it fester and grow. Axel and Dallas pick up the wins.
Winners and STILL RAW Tag Team Champions: The B-Team (Curtis Axel & Bo Dallas)
WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match
Cedric Alexander (c) vs. Drew Gulak
I expect these guys to try to steal the show and put 205 Live on the map once more. Alexander has been doing a good job as the Cruiserweight Champion, but I think that there needs to be a shake up for the brand and a new champion, especially if it’s a great heel like Gulak, may be the just the one needed to do it. These guys will fly and have the audience screaming in excitement and it’s going to be a match for the ages. And when the dust settles, I think that Gulak will end up stealing a win and walking out with the Purple strapped piece of 205 Gold.
Winner and NEW Cruiserweight Champion: Drew Gulak
United States Championship Match
Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Jeff Hardy
Nothing against Jeff, but he doesn’t need to be a champion to get over with the WWE fans. Shinsuke is still rebounding from the lackluster feud against AJ Styles and his failure to capture the WWE Championship so he needs to be kept strong to keep the rebound from going south and to remain relevant. In my opinion, we’ll see Randy Orton end up getting involved and costing Jeff a win, thus leading the way to their upcoming feuds while allowing Shinsuke to keep the U.S. title and move on to new contenders.
Winner and STILL U.S. Champion: Shinsuke Nakamura
Triple Threat Match – Smackdown Women’s Championship
Carmella (c) vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch
I hate these triple-threat style matches where it’s two faces set up against the heel champion. I’d love to see James Ellsworth come back (again) and get involved to help Carmella retain. I just want Carmella to retain. Look for Charlotte and Becky to end up fighting each other and ‘Mella taking advantage to steal a win and retain the title. After all, ‘Mella means money and it’s too soon to take the belt off of her. She’s really just starting to come into her own as the Champion and after the wins against Asuka, she’s on a roll and it shouldn’t stop just yet.
Winner and STILL Smackdown Women’s Champion: Carmella
Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz
Wrestling 101 of a big time major feud is that after a great build, the heel always wins the first big match. If the face wins the first match, what’s the point in keeping it going? If the heel wins, he can brag and crow about his victory and the face has to come back and redeem himself. No one is bigger and better at bragging and crowing than the Miz. Throw Maryse into the mix to cause a disruption and taint the win, thus giving Bryan a reason to be even more motivated and pissed in his quest for revenge. This is the first of probably many to come so look for the Miz to cheat and win… and it will be AWESOME!
Winner: The Miz
Dolph Ziggler (c) w/ Drew McIntyre vs. Seth Rollins w/ Dean Ambrose
With both Drew and Ambrose on the outside of the ring for this match, there is no way in hell that there will be a clean finish. Look for probably the match of the night and lots of shenanigans from all four men as the match goes on. I don’t really feel like it’s time for a title change just yet. Seth doesn’t need the belt, especially now that Ambrose is back in action as well and I can see them going after the Universal Championship or maybe even the tag team titles at some point. I think the antics of Drew and Ambrose outside the ring will cause a distraction for the referee and Dolph will take advantage to hit a low blow or some other reprehensible lowlife move and manage to steal the win, thus retaining his title.
Winner and STILL Intercontinental Champion: Dolph Ziggler
If Braun Loses In Any Fashion, Owens wins the MITB Contract / Briefcase
Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens
I’m kind of torn on this one because Braun is so over right now, he doesn’t need to have that contract or anything else really, but I can see the WWE wanting a “feel good” moment either on Sunday night or on Monday by having Braun cash in that contract on Roman or Brock or whoever the Universal Champion is. I can also see Kevin Owens sneaking around and with new buddy Jinder Mahal as an accomplice, cashing in that contract if he has it after this match. This match can go two ways. Either Braun ends it quickly with a squash before Owens has a chance to pull any shenanigans and then moving on to challenging for the big title or else Kevin does as he’s been doing so often lately and pulls some tricks causing Braun to be DQ’ed or counted-out and thus, walks out with that contract and briefcase. I’m a big Owens fan and I just think having a heel with that contract works better than having a face so I’ll go for Owens, with help from Jinder and Company, to get Braun counted out. Owens wins the match and the contract.
Winner: Kevin Owens
Smackdown Tag Team Championship
The Bludgeon Brothers (c) vs. The New Day
It’s not a new day, no it ain’t. I don’t think that we’ve really had a chance yet to see Harper and Rowan just really cut loose as a tag team and show what they can do. I’m so burnt out and tired of the New Day, I don’t want to see them win… ever. Look for the guys with the really big hammers to pound the pancake lovers into a messy little mess.
Winners and STILL Smackdown Tag Team Champions: Harper and Rowan – The Bludgeon Brothers
Finn Balor vs. Baron Corbin
Corbin had the last laugh on RAW this past week, thus that means that Balor gets the big win here.
Winner: Finn Balor
RAW Women’s Championship Match
Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Ronda Rousey
I do not want to see Ronda Rousey become the RAW Women’s Champion. I can see the WWE going this way for all of the publicity that it would generate and to make the fans happy, but if they do put the belt on Ronda, who do they have eventually beat her and take the title away? The belt ends up just like the belt Brock has, meaningless, because while I’m sure that Ronda would defend more than Brock does, the matches would be just a waste because no one should be able to beat her. Better to have, and I think this is how it will go, Ronda snap and lock Bliss in a submission hold, but then get DQ’ed for refusing to break the hold after the match, thus Alexa retains the title, but Ronda is still looking like a total beast. Either that or else someone, either Alicia Fox or Mickie James or maybe even both, attack Ronda and get Alexa DQ’ed, thus giving Ronda the win, but allowing Alexa to keep her title. I like option B the best so let’s go with that.
Winner (by DQ) – Ronda Rousey (Alexa retains her title).
WWE Championship Match
AJ Styles (c) vs. Samoa Joe
If these two are able to do half of the stuff that they did together in TNA, this is going to be one helluva good match. I would love to see Joe have a run as the WWE Champion, but I can’t really see the WWE taking the title off of AJ right now either. He’s really on a roll as the big dog on Smackdown Live and just passed JBL as the longest running World Champion in Smackdown history. I would think that they’d want to keep the title on him at least a little while longer. Regardless, these two are going to work stiff and have one damn good match. I think that it’ll be close and a fight that could easily go either way, but AJ will stand tall at the end of the night and find a way to retain that gold.
Winner and STILL WWE Champion: AJ Styles
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Roman Reigns
I said it a few days ago in a wrestling Q&A and I’ll say it here again. Roman Reigns will NOT leave SummerSlam as the WWE Universal Champion. Does that mean that Brock wins? Not necessarily, but that is a possibility. It’s also an option that Braun Strowman or Kevin Owens, whoever wins their match, will come down and cash in that Money In The Bank contract to take the title away from the winner of this match. Actually, I think if there is a cash in by anyone, it’ll happen Monday night on RAW. These two men are going to beat the holy hell out of each other. I expect Paul Heyman to get involved and maybe even take a bump from Roman at some point. And the match finish? How about Roman is beating the hell out of Brock and is on the verge of winning the title and Heyman pulls the referee out, causing Brock to be DQ’ed. Yes, the same finish pretty much as the Rousey / Bliss match, but it would work. Roman wins the match, but not the title. Brock is proud of himself for pulling a stunt and saying a big “FU” to the WWE Universe. He then shows up on RAW to brag about how he “outsmarted everyone” and Roman attacks. In the aftermath of the Roman beatdown on Brock, we get the MITB cash-in and a new champ, neither Brock or Roman, but hopefully Owens, reigns. Hey, that works for me.
Winner by DQ: Roman Reigns (Brock retains the Universal Championship).
And there you go. My predictions for WWE SummerSlam 2018. So what do you think? What are you predictions? Let me know. It should be a really good and fun, stacked show to watch and I’m looking forward to it. But for now, I’m looking forward to bed so I’m going to close this up. Thank you for reading. Enjoy SummerSlam and NXT Takeover: Brooklyn and I’ll catch you later. Take care.
