Tossing Salt Presents:
TV / Movies Fact or Fiction
Black Panther, Big Bang Theory, Charmed & More
August 31, 2018
It’s time to do that Fact or Fiction thing, the TV and movies edition. As per the usual, the questions come from the fine, outstanding folks at 411mania.com and more specifically, Jeremy Thomas. And I’m the man with the opinions that follow. Let’s do this…
Marvel’s hopes aside, Black Panther isn’t likely to get a Best Picture nomination.
FACT: It’s a movie based on a comic book character and regardless of how good the movie is, and it was very good, the snobs that be the Academy Awards are not going to lower themselves to give a comic book movie a nomination, let alone an actual Oscar. If anything, the best that Disney and the Black Panther movie might be able to hope for is the much talked about “Most Popular” category, a token award designed to cater to the movies that made all the money, but are not “pure” and “artistic” in nature. It’s a nice thought, but it’s not going to happen. No way and no how.
A television series is the right direction to take the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.
FICTION: While some horror franchises have a background story and depth to them, I don’t see The Texas Chainsaw Massacre as one of them. A series works when it tells a story and the viewers can relate to one or more of the characters. How will they relate to Leatherface? The family is crazy and whacked out as hell. Leatherface is nuts and psychotic and cuts people up with a chainsaw. It’s pretty cut and dry and doesn’t make a long, complex story. Movie is the right outlet for this story and these characters and maybe a mini-series, but that would be reaching. A regular television series though? Nah, I can’t see it.
Kin will be quickly forgotten amidst the pack of other lower-budget science fiction films released so far this year.
FACT: I never even heard of the movie until I saw this question. I went and looked at the trailer and I’m still not impressed or excted. It might be good, but I don’t see anything special about it as of yet and have no interest in seeing it or even giving it another thought once I end this answer. Just another generic sci-fi movie and nothing more.
CBS is smart to end The Big Bang Theory after the upcoming season.
FACT: After twelve seasons, what’s left? Maybe a spin-off series featuring some of the other characters could work, but this show, while still funny and on top of the ratings, was getting more by-the-numbers and starting to lose direction in my opinion. Better to go out while on top and in the hearts of fans everywhere rather than lose that spark and become a shadow of what the show once was. Good call by Jim Parsons, who’s ready to move on, and by CBS to agree and end the series.
The new Suspiria trailer has you looking forward to seeing the film.
FACT: Unlike the trailer for the Kin movie I spoke of earlier, this trailer was damn good and caught my attention pretty quickly. I even went back and watched it a couple more times. From what I understand, this is a remake of a movie from 1977 that was supposedly really good, but I don’t know because I’ve never seen it. The trailer for this new movie though has me wanting to go back and watch the original as well as see the new one when it’s released. I think it’s going to be good.
The CW’s Charmed reboot doesn’t interest you.
FACT: I wasn’t a big fan of the original series although I did watch it from time to time (and had a crush on Shannon Doherty) for a while. It wasn’t so much the Charmed series, but her work in “Mallrats” that made me think she was so awesome. Anyhow, the original series was okay, but got old pretty quickly and became must-not-see TV most weeks. And the new one? It might be good, but I doubt I’ll ever know because who has the time to get caught up in another series again anyhow. The Buffy reboot, I’ll find the time for. This one though, probably not.
And I guess thtat’s all for now. I’ll be back later with my thoughts and predictions for the “All In” wrestling event coming up on Saturday as well as a “Pop Culture” Fact or Fiction edition. And probably lots more stuff too so look for it. Thank you for reading and for the support of the site. I do all of this for you. Never forget that. And until later, I’m down and gone. Have a great day and I’ll catch you later.
