Music Q&A: The Outlaws, Concerts, Kanye & More – October 8, 2018

Tossing Salt Presents:
Music Q&A
October 8, 2018

Let’s talk about the sounds of music. It’s Music Q&A time. And away we go…

If the album “Wanted: The Outlaws” was released today, who would be the featured artists?

It’s hard to say since there aren’t very many “real” outlaws left. Most are given the title and told how to be an outlaw and what it’s supposed to mean by their record labels looking for a tag-line and marketing tool. Waylon, Willie, Tompall and Jessi were the real deal and the kids today? Oh vey! But there are a few who are true rebels in their own way, shape and form and remain true to what’s inside of them and I guess those would be the ones who qualify. The “Waylon” of the group would have to be Shooter Jennings. He’s every bit as defiant as his dad was and marches to his own beat. For the “Willie” role, let’s go with John Rich of “Big & Rich”. He’s as country as there is, but he’s another who does what he wants and damn the consequences. For the “Tompall” spot, let’s tag in Steve Grand. Tompall would be pissed, but Grand is a helluva singer, a helluva song writer and I like him. And for the “Jessi” role, well there ain’t but one Jessi, but I’d let Gretchen Wilson step up and be the female voice of this group. Unlike some “outlaw women”, she’s the real deal and damn, that woman can sing. So there you go…

What would be a dream concert for you to attend?

Most of my long time favorites have passed away and died. That’s the bad thing about being old. But using only living artists, I’d go for something like the CMT: Outlaws special that was on a few years ago. That one featured Kid Rock, Hank Jr. Shooter, Big & Rich, Brooks & Dunn, Tanya Tucker, Skynyrd and so many others. It was awesome and I like that format. But my concert would mix rock & country a little more and feature Alice Cooper, Shooter Jennings, Steve Grand, Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart, Kid Rock, Gretchen Wilson, Jessi Colter, Rickie Lee Jones, The Village People, Elton John, Mod Son and a special appearance by Eminem.

Has your opinion of Kanye West changed since he starting being so pro-Trump?

I still think he’s full of himself and bat-shit crazy. He just happened to have a moment of clarity and realizes what a sham things have become with the liberal craziness and hatred of free speech that doesn’t fit their agenda. Trump has opened a lot of eyes to the major hypocrisy on the left and in the liberal circles and Kanye just happened to look past his massive ego for a second and realizes this. He’s still an idiot for what he did to Taylor Swift and Beck, but at least now, he has one redeeming quality.

What is your favorite and least favorite genre of music?

I love and listen to all kinds of music, but my definite favorite is the big band styles of the crooners from the 40’s and 50’s. Think Sinatra, Sammy, etc and there you go. As for least, we all know my answer to this. The West Texas Rednecks has it totally right. Rap truly is crap. ‘Nuff said!

What are, in your opinion, the Top 5 Musical movies of all time?

I love musicals and movies based on musicals and my favorites change all the time, but at the moment, a quick list of my five favorites would be Rent!, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hair, Shock Treatment and the South Park Movie: Bigger, Longer, Uncut. This may change tomorrow, but these five are awesome and everyone should check them out if you like musicals.

And there you go. I’m through for now. Time to go to work to help unload a big truck full of liquor. Thanks for reading and until the next time, take care and have a great one.
