Tossing Salt Presents:
AEW, Lucha Underground & More
February 12, 2019
I got these earlier today from a man named Ron. My thanks Sir. And rather than do my usual procrastination, let’s just get right to it. And away we go.
1.Do you think there will be a lot of departures from WWE considering AEW is reportedly paying really well, offering a lighter schedule, and creative freedom?
I do think that there may be a few names that decide to make that switch and go see if the grass really is greener on the other side or not. This will be the men and women who have grown stale and realize that they are more the past of WWE than future and if they want to remain an important piece of the puzzle, then they need to change. Some folks, like Dolph, Randy Orton, Zack Ryder, Gallows & Anderson, etc, would probably do better in a place like AEW, but I think that the majority of the WWE rosters will be content to wait and see how things go at AEW before they make a jump and give up WWE to join the new group. Some will jump to be sure, but most will hold off for a bit.
2.Do you see AEW and Impact forming a partnership?
Not at all. AEW is the future and Impact is a ship that’s sinking and going down fast. If AEW does do any partnerships, it would be with companies that are strong and growing like ROH and MLW, not dying companies that mean less and less each day like Impact.
3.Could you see AEW making a play for Brock Lesnar when he is contractually free from WWE?
I can see them throwing an offer out there, but I doubt that Brock would even consider it or take it seriously.
4.Should AEW have some kind of presence Wrestlemania weekend?
I’m kind of torn on this one because I don’t like seeing other wrestling companies trying to piggyback and sponge off the WWE’s success, but on the other hand, it’s the largest gathering of wrestling fans each year and they’re going to be there for a week living, breathing, thinking and dreaming pro wrestling. If there’s a place to get people to see your product and make some money, that would be it. AEW should probably try and cash in and hold an event of some kind during Wrestlemania week in New Jersey.
5.What is your take on King Cuerno and others filing a lawsuit to get out of their Lucha Underground deals?
If Lucha Underground is doing as Cuerno and others have suggested, not giving them consistent work and paying shows, but at the same time, holding them hostage to their contracts and not allowing them to work other wrestling dates and make money to pay their bills and feed their families, then they have every right to sue and attempt to get out of their contracts. The way I understand it, Lucha Underground has not given a definite committment to a new season and the wrestlers under contract are just forced to wait. They’re not getting paid because there is no show as of yet, but they can’t work other events and for other companies because they’re under contract to Lucha Underground, so what exactly are they supposed to do? Go work at Wal-Mart and wait for Lucha management to decide what they want to do? These people are wrestlers and entertainers and they should be allowed to make a living and if Lucha can’t give them the work promised, then they should be allowed to find and work for others that can.
6.Should WWE get rid of house shows and replace them with more international touring considering house shows are drawing poorly?
Get rid of them? Nope. It’s a big part of the way that they connect to their audience and sell merchandise and nothing beats the experience for a fan of attending a live show and seeing your favorite wrestlers and TV personalities live in and in person. But maybe a reworking of the way they’re scheduled and some tweaking to make the shows better would be helpful in picking up the live show business. Add some surprises. Send TV crews to the live events and let things “happen” on occasion. Have guests like former wrestlers and stars from the past who were popular in the region that is hosting the show. Make each live show an event and a happening. If the show is worth going to, people will attend so just make it so.
And there you go. My thanks to Ron for these great questions. If you have questions like these or any comments, thoughts or suggestions about the site or what I can write about, please give me a shout. Go check out the videos for Adrenaline Pro Wrestling (APW) that I’ve posted up at the site. Thanks for reading. And with that, I’m out of here. Have a great one and I’ll catch you later.
