Ultimate Wrestling Q&A
Royal Rumble, Edge, Head Butts & More
February 9, 2020
I’m back. Did you miss me? Welcome to the Ultimate Wrestling Q&A, exclusive to DougMaynard.com, where no question is too big or too small. It’s been a couple of weeks since my last post here at the site and my apologies for that. Medical issues, lots of pain and lack of focus have all played a significant role and I’ve been out of commission, but alas, things are getting better and I’m back now. These questions, courtesy of Cheese, Dave S., and Will, have been waiting to be addressed. Well, the wait is over. Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs on their Super Bowl victory Sunday night over the San Francisco 49ers and to Vince McMahon for a great start for the XFL this weekend. Now let’s talk wrestling.
The Revival reportedly asked for their releases from WWE (again). Thoughts?
From what I understand, the WWE has offered this excellent tag team a deal that would pay nearly 700k a year each to stay with the company, but for Dash & Wilder, it’s not about the money. It’s about being used well and being part of a strong tag team division. I have to respect these men because they’re looking at the big picture and all the money in the world doesn’t matter if you’re not happy. I don’t blame WWE for not wanting to lose these guys. They are good wrestlers, have a strong following and add some credibility to the roster for the older fans. But if WWE can’t promise them the kind of opportunities that they’re looking for, they need to just go ahead and cut them loose. Just shake hands and go their separate ways so that The Revival can do what they love, working for people who appreciate them while WWE can continue to run their tag team division as they see fit with all parties content. I would prefer to see The Revival remain in WWE so I can enjoy their matches and in-ring excellence, but for their sake and the WWE’s, if they can’t work out their issues with the company and want to leave, WWE should just release them and let them leave.
Thoughts on the apparent heat between Matt Riddle and Brock Lesnar?
It seems that Riddle has a habit of trying to start programs with other wrestlers, but doesn’t have the sense to inform the other wrestler first. Riddle is a talented dude and future star, but unless there is a reason to poke the bigger names, aka Goldberg and Brock, he should learn how to back off and behave himself. Right now, Brock and Riddle are on two different levels in WWE and they are not going to be competing against each other. Brock called Riddle out on this and Brock is right. Riddle has a long way to go before Brock’s name should be coming out of his mouth. He (Riddle) just needs to focus on NXT and his own career and leave Brock alone.
John Cena said that Brock Lesnar is the best of all time? Is he right?
“Best of all time” is speculative and Cena may believe that and that’s his opinion. I don’t necessarily agree, but I do think that arguments can be made for Brock as part of anyone’s “Top Ten”.
Do you think John Cena will be performing at Wrestlemania this year and if so, who would you like to see him wrestle?
I don’t think we’ll see Cena in an actual match, but I do think that if he’s available, he will be there and taking part in the Rumble in some manner. But if he is available and does have an actual match, I’d like to see Cena face the power of 24/7 Champion Mojo Rawley. Or heck, how about R-Truth taking on his childhood hero in a match? No reason needed, but that would be a fun match to see.
Thoughts on the two Royal Rumble matches and the entire PPV?
I thought that the PPV, as a whole, was well done and a good and fun event. As for the two Rumble matches, I enjoyed both of them and was extremely happy to see Drew McIntyre go over and be the one to eliminate Brock. Charlotte as the winner of the Women’s Rumble match didn’t thrill me quite as much, but I can see the logic behind that choice and it was a good match.
Are you glad to see Edge back?
Absolutely! Edge got a raw deal when he was forced to retire due to his neck injuries and the joy he felt being able to come back and defy the odds, it was an incredible moment. Welcome back Edge. Now let’s see if we can get his hetero-lifemate, Christian, back into the ring and then all will truly be great with the world of pro wrestling again.
What was the biggest surprise this year for you at the Rumble?
Probably the lack of surprises and guest appearances. We had Molly and Beth Phoenix, along with Santina in the Women’s Rumble and MVP in the Men’s Rumble match, but nothing really shocking or surprising except for the return of Edge. But then again, I guess that was enough.
Did the right two people win the Rumble matches?
I think so. Yes.
Is Matt Hardy through with the WWE?
I hope not, but as of this writing, it sure appears that way unless a last-moment deal is reached. It’s not about the money, but Matt is concerned with how he’ll be used going forward and that’s a legitimate worry for the “Broken One”. If Matt doesn’t stay with the WWE, I’m sure that the NWA and AEW would both be glad to have Hardy as part of their families and he’ll do wonderful so no worries about that. With WWE, it remains to be seen, but all indicators appear to show that the ride is nearly at its end.
Andrade has been suspended thirty days for a WWE Wellness violation, yet he’s still the U.S. Champion. Why?
He’s still the champion because Paul Heyman and Vince McMahon both want him to remain the Champion. Thirty days isn’t a long time and the United States title isn’t so important that ignoring it for a month is going to matter all that much.
Thoughts on the return of MVP and his match on RAW against Rey Mysterio?
It was cool to see MVP back in a WWE ring. He had a good match against Rey on RAW Monday night and now, he’s going back to the Indy’s and thinking of his retirement. It was nice to see him back, but he has nothing to offer WWE at this point so a quick one-shot was probably the best thing he could do. Good luck with your retirement MVP.
Harley Race & Haku versus Brock Lesnar & Jack Swagger. Who wins?
In a legit fight, I’d have to go with Harley and Haku because as big and dangerous as Brock and Swagger are, I think Harley would just shoot them and be done with it.
Who had the best head butt?
The guy with the hardest head. Harley Race’s diving headbutt was devastating and Bobo Brazil’s “coco-butt” was effective as well.
And I’ll end this one here. I have more questions, but I also have two Fact or Fiction columns to get to as well as a “Days of Dougie” piece that may or may not see the light of day. The jury is still out about that. My thanks for reading and for supporting the site. My name may be on the Marquee’, but it’s all about you, my loyal readers and friends. Have a great one and I’ll catch you on the flip side. Don’t forget to support your local Indy wrestling companies and wrestlers. I’ll see you at the matches.
