Good morning to you. Instead of my now usual “Thirty Days” piece, I’m going back for a few minutes to dance with the Belle of the Ball, what brought me to the dance to start off with and that’s my first love, professional wrestling. BD Productions is back! Yay! And in honor of that, plus the fact that we’re 19 days away from Wrestlemania, I’m going to do a “Fact Or Fiction” thingy. I may do another blog later today, time permitting, but if I don’t make it, at least I’ll have done this column right here.
Tossing Salt Presents: Wrestling Fact or Fiction
March 14, 2017
As usual, the statements come from my good, long time personal friends over at 411mania.com. The views and opinions expressed are mine. Let’s do this…
1. You would rather see Braun Strowman vs. Undertaker at WrestleMania over Roman Reigns vs. Undertaker at WrestleMania.
Fiction: While I would like to see Braun have a good, high profile match on the Wrestlemania event, I’m perfectly content with seeing Roman face up against Undertaker. Roman can be counted on to carry Taker to a good and solid match and with the whole “my yard” deal going on, it makes sense. If I was WWE, I would consider adding Braun to the match and making it a triple-threat, but it looks as if the card will already be packed with multi-man matches, so I guess that’s out. Maybe Braun versus Big Show since the long anticipated Big Show versus Shaq match seems to be off. But Show’s been put in the Andre the Giant event so who knows what they’re going to do. But Roman and Taker will be a good match and if they want to really pull the trigger on a Roman heel turn, having him beat Taker would be the perfect way to do it.
2. While the Hardys have “signed’ with ROH, they will be back in WWE by the end on 2017.
Fact: I think it’s not even a matter of it, but just when. The Hardys are among the biggest things in the world of professional wrestling right now and TNA, excuse me, Impact Wrestling, was totally stupid and insane to let them go and even dumber, if that’s possible, to now attempt to steal the “broken” gimmick with a cease and desist. While some at Impact may have contributed an idea or two in helping to round out the “Broken Matt” and “Brother Nero” characters, it’s all Matt, Jeff and their entourage of Reby, Maxel and Senor Benjamin, who we now know didn’t earn a penny from TNA during the time he was appearing on their roster, who did all of the work in making these characters work. It’s Matt and Jeff who used their home to create a broken world and allowed Impact to share in the broken glory. Reby is right. F*ck the Owl! As for Matt and Jeff, when they go back to WWE, I don’t think we’ll see the exact same “Broken” characters we’ve been seeing for the past couple of years, nor do I think we’ll see the old Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy, who orriginally made their original names and impact in a WWF ring. I think we’ll see a unique and happy mix of the two. And tag teams like The New Day, they have a big major deletion in their futures. I can’t wait to see it happen.
3. The Raw women’s title match at WrestleMania should be Sasha Banks vs. Bayley.
Fiction: While I have nothing against either woman and think they definitely deserve a spot at the biggest show of the year, Charlotte Flair has been the top woman on RAW for most of the year and if she’s not a part of the RAW Women’s title match in some way, shape or form, it just wouldn’t be right. It looks as if they’re going to do a Triple Threat match, or maybe a Fatal 4-Way with Nia Jax added to the mix. That, I can live with and enjoy. Just make sure that Charlotte is part of the mix.
4. Alberto El Patron is a great signing for TNA.
Fiction: While bringing in El Patron might be good for the short term, he has never been, in my eyes, a big time player. His last run in the WWE was a total bust and he brings a great deal of baggage with him. He’s just another former WWE star who burned that bridge with the folks up North and is there to take advantage and use Impact until he gets tired of it and burns that bridge as well, sooner rather than later. Rather than waste their time with another WWE reject, Impact would have been better served to keep the talent they had, such as The Hardys, Mike Bennett and Maria and Drew McIntyre happy and in the fold rather than goof around with contract negotiations, change previously agreed upon terms and trying to extort money from their talents by getting part of their booking fees when they wrestle for other companies. Looking at TNA over the past few weeks, one almost wishes that Dixie Carter was back in charge. And no, I can’t believe I said that either, but Impact, at least on the management end of things, just seems to be messing up again and again. To use a broken term, they need to be “DELETED!”.
5. You have no interest in checking out Bully Ray in Ring of Honor.
Fact: It’s nothing personal against Bully Ray. I think he’s a great character and a major name and I’m sure he’ll add a great deal of excitement to an already great product at ROH. It’s just that with all of the WWE programming I try to watch, mixed with The Network, a few other shows and real life added to the mix, I don’t have time to watch ROH or follow the product aside from checking out the wrestling news sites. I wish that they had allowed Bubba do do his thing in WWE and it’s a shame that it fell through, but I get it. Bully Ray was a TNA character and the WWE fans were more familiar with Bubba as a Dudley instead of a Bully so WWE went with that. It was a mistake and I think the WWE Universe lost out on some good characters and wrestling action because of that short-sightedness. But Bubba will do good and add a lot to any locker room or promotion he’s a part of. I just won’t be watching. I just don’t have enough time in the day.
6. What is your excitement level for WrestleMania 33?
Right now, it’s about a “6” out of “10”. The build has been okay and most of the matches signed so far promise that the show will be a day of good wrestling, good characters and lots of big moments. But there isn’t that one match yet that really strikes me as “must see” or “instant classic”. It’s like yeah, okay and whatever. I’m sure that as more matches are announced and we get closer to the event, my excitement will pick up a bit, but right now, it’s just not doing it for me. And I was really looking so forward to seeing that long anticipated Big Show versus Shaq match too, damn it.
And that’s it for me. Another edition of “Wrestling Fact or Fiction” in the books and this also doubles as Day 23 of my “Thirty Days Of Dougie!” series. I was going to do something else, but it’s getting late and I pretty much wasted the entire day with personal matters (and a longer than anticipated nap) so time is not on my side. This still counts as “writing something every day” and I’ll use it as such.
Thank you for reading. I’ll be back tomorrow to write about something and I’ll be back sometime in the next 15 or so days with a Wrestlemania prediction column once all the matches are in place and finalized. As for now, “dat’ is all de’ people need to know!”. I’m Doug and Puddles Pity Party is a hardcore clown. It’s true! Catch you later.
