Tossing Salt Presents:
WWE Royal Rumble:
Thoughts & Predictions
January 27, 2018
Tomorrow night, live on pay-per-view and the WWE Network, is the 2018 WWE Royal Rumble event from Philadelphia, PA. It’s a totally jacked card for the WWE and one of the biggest events of the year as it officially begins the start of the “Road To Wrestlemania”. Three matches have been announced for the kick-off show and there are four matches, plus the two “Royal Rumble” matches, announced for the main show. Lots of action and excitement and that means lots of speculating as to who will win, who will lose, who will make a guess appearance, who let the dogs out and all of that fun stuff. So sit back and let’s figure out at least part of this. It’s time for my inner-psychic to come forth. It’s prediction time. Let’s do this…
WWE United States champion Bobby Roode will defend in an Open Challenge.
And who will be the challenger? Jinder Mahal? Baron Corbin? Maybe even the MIA Dolph Ziggler? How about someone new and freshly from Impact, such as Ethan Carter III? He’s been at the Performance Center working out and getting ready for something. And hell, James Storm is a free-agent right now. Maybe we’ll see the Glorious One in the ring and then hear something about his “damn luck”, leading to a Beer Money reunion and feud for the United States Championship. Nah, WWE wouldn’t be that good to us. I’ll go with Jinder as the challenger. And regardless of who the challenge is from, the end results will be the same. Absolutely glorious.
Winner and STILL United States Champion: Bobby Roode
Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson vs. The Revival in a rematch from Raw 25.
Gallows and Anderson are back on the right track, with the reformation of the Balor Club, the interaction with DX this past Monday and of course, the win and beatdown of The Revival. They can afford a loss. The Revival are just getting started after a series of injury issues and they can’t afford to lose again, not yet anyhow. Look for The Revival coming out for revenge and retribution tomorrow night. And old school wins.
Winners: The Revival
Kalisto & Lince Dorado & Gran Metalik vs. Drew Gulak & TJP & Jack Gallagher.
No real rhyme or reason for this match and it doesn’t matter who wins. The action will be good and the fans will yawn and take a piss break because that’s how they are. The heels have the better and more intersting characters and I’ll go with the three more fleshed out and entertaining (to me) characters. Hopefully, we’ll see a Power Point presentation by Gulak.
Winners: Drew Gulak, TJP and Jack Gallagher
30 competitor Men’s Royal Rumble.
The names that I keep hearing the most are Shinsuke Nakamura or Roman Reigns. And no offense to either man, but we need a big surprise here and something different. Please, no Randy Orton either. I would love to see Daniel Bryan enter at #30 and end up with a big win, but I don’t really expect to see that happen either. I’m kind of stumped right now because with the WWE’s system of building and then breaking down a talent, not really allowing anyone not named Cena to get over consistently, it kind of takes away a lot of options. Damn, it’ll probably be Shinsuke Nakamura. I can’t think of anyone else that would work in this spot. And as for surprise appearances, I’d go with Chris Masters, Ethan Carter III, Billy Gunn and (crosses fingers) The Disco Inferno.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura
30 competitor Women’s Royal Rumble.
Logic says Asuka. Rumors keep saying Ronda Rousey. I think we will see Rousey making her official WWE debut and getting involved somehow. I don’t think she’ll be in the official match. Look for Ronda to cause a distraction that allows Asuka to be eliminated, thus setting up a match between the two at Wrestlemania. As for the Rumble match, I’ll go with Becky Lynch. No real reason here, but she just seems to be the best candidate for this. As for guest spots, how about Victoria, Lita, Trish and a Bella (or two).
Winner: Becky Lynch
WWE champion AJ Styles vs. Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens – Handicap match.
Kevin and Sami as Co-WWE Champions? The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. Can their egos and characters work together and survive as a team, especially if the WWE Championship is involved? That’s a strong potential storyline that’s probably too obvious for the WWE to pass up, plus imagine the shenanigans in the Shane / Kevin / Sami rivalry if Zayn and Owens hold that WWE title. As much as I like AJ and would like to see him keep the title at least until Wrestlemania, the potential for craziness and choas works too well if the WWE goes the other direction.
Winners and NEW WWE Champions: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
WWE Universal champion Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman vs. Kane.
Braun is big and cool and a monster, but I can’t really see him as ready to be the top guy for the RAW brand just yet. Brock can win and lose the title and it won’t really affect him or his character at all, as we saw last year with Goldberg. So I’m going with Kane here. A short transitional run for the Big Red Machine to honor him for twenty plus years of service, especially since it seems that his in-ring days are coming to an end, especially if he continues to venture into local politics. Look for a crazy brawl and in the end, Kane will take home the title, at least until the Elimination Chamber.
Winner and NEW Universal Champion: Kane
WWE Raw Tag Team champions Seth Rollins & Jason Jordan vs. The Bar.
What I want to know is where is Titus Worldwide in all of this? They’ve defeated The Bar two weeks in a row on RAW and yet they’re not even on the card except for the Rumble match and yet The Bar is getting yet another title shot? Crazy. I don’t expect to see a title change here. There is still way too much to do with Jordan and Seth to cut the legs out from under them this early. Champions retain.
Winners and STILL RAW Tag Team Champions: Seth Rollins and Jason Jordan
WWE Smackdown Tag Team champions The Usos vs. Shelton Benjamin & Chad Gable: Best Two out of Three Falls.
The Usos are probably the top tag team in the WWE right now and are immune as to title wins and losses. They can lose every match and it doesn’t matter. They are that damn good. Shelton and Chad? They’re damn good as well, but if they don’t do something soon, they may as well give it up. I think it’s time to shake things up on the Smackdown Tag Team scene and the best way to do that is with new faces and new champs. Look for the two teams to split the first two falls and then in the final fall, shenanigans and probably the wrong person takes the pin and gets the win. Shelton and Chad win the gold.
Winners and NEW Smackdown Tag Team Champions: Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable
