Tossing Salt Presents:
Music Fact or Fiction
April 22, 2018
It’s Sunday and it’s time to play catch-up. I’m Doug and this is that Fact or Fiction thing that we do. It’s the music edition. The statements come from my friends over at 411mania.com/music. And the rest is all me. Let’s do this.
1. You’re interested in reading Prince’s unfinished memoir.
FACT: It’s Prince and even though this stuff isn’t finished, it’s as close to looking inside the head of the mysterious purple one as we’ll ever get a chance to do now that he’s passed. He had a hell of a life and was such a creative force of nature, I’m definitely interested in seeing what this book has to offer.
2. Kendrick Lamar was the right choice to get a Pulitzer for DAMN.
FACT: What does one even have to do to win a Pulitzer? I should look it up for the requirements, but I don’t have time and am too lazy anyhow. From what I understand, “DAMN” is a great album and not just a tribute to Ron Simmons so if it’s eligible, I like Lamar and it shakes things up so what the hell. Give it to him.
3. Coachella has been a hit so far this year.
FACT: From what I’ve seen, it’s been getting mostly positive reviews, the attendance is good and there was a Destiny’s Child reunion. It’s making money and the publicity has been all fairly good so I guess that qulaifies as a hit. I’d prersonally rather go see OzzFest or maybe a Hank Jr. and Friends package show, but to each his own, right?
4. Flea’s memoir could be a fun read.
FACT: It’s Flea. He’s part of one of the most eclectic and interesting bands in history. He runs around on stage with just a sock on his dick. He’s an actor and was part of the movie “My Own Private Idaho” playing a mentally challenged male prostitute. Of course it could be a fun read. I expect a lot of heads will turn, a lot of bridges will be burned (and then quickly mended because who can stay mad at Flea?), and it will be one of the top memoirs of the past several years. Even if it sucks, it should be fascinating. After all, it’s Flea. ‘Nuff said!
5. The backlash over Taylor Swift’s cover of Earth, Wind and Fire’s “September” is overblown.
FACT: I haven’t actually heard any kind of backlash, but then again, it’s Taylor Swift and I really don’t care all that much about her anyhow. I still think she should have kicked Kayne in the balls when he came up on stage and stole her MTV Video Award moment all those years ago, but that was then and this is now. She’s a talented performer, but the bud is off the rose and it’s just kind of “Eh” at best for me these days. But for this question, I did go listen to the song. And it’s not great. Earth, Wind and Fire are a iconic group with a distinct magic and sound and Taylor Swift’s version just doesn’t seem to get it. It’s bland and boring and just kind of there. But is it awful? I’ve heard worse covers many, many times. I’ve also heard better. The backlash is just people on the internet complaining and bitching because that’s what people on the internet do. It’s not a big deal and neither are most of their opinions. Except for mine here at the site. Mine matter. Theirs don’t.
6. You enjoyed Nicki Minaj’s new songs “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun Li.”
FICTION: Dougie don’t do Minaj. She sucks! And she needs to quit wearing clown make-up too.
And that’s all for me here and now. Thanks for reading. Comments and questions are welcome and appreciated. Until the next time, take care. Love ya Peeps.
