Tossing Salt Review:
Bud Light Orange
July 17, 2019
It’s been a while since I’ve done a product review and what better item to give the old taste test and once over to than a new product out by Budweiser, Bud Light Orange. Yes, I said orange. With the success of their Lime flavored products, Bud Light decided to take it to the next level and mix the great flavor of the King of Beers, the lighter and tastier edition, with the taste of orange peels and citrus. Doesn’t sound very appealing, does it? Well maybe it is and maybe it isn’t, but that’s what we’re here to find out. Before I get to the tasting and review, let me briefly tell how this particular choice of items came about.
I was at our local Food Lion grocery store doing the volunteer thing I do three days weekly, picking up food for one of the local food banks. Food Lion contributes, I pick it up and take it to the church and they distribute every Thursday, providing food and substance for hundreds of people. I was running a little early yesterday and had to wait for the different departments to get my stuff ready and was generally just standing around in the back room of the store, wasting time and talking to the Budweiser man who was dropping off his merchandise. I know the man from my previous days working at a local convenient store and we were just chatting, playing catch-up and all that. On his load of merchandise, I noticed several cases of Bud Light, but these were not the regular Bud Light bottles of which I used to partake of and drink so often back in the day. These cases were orange in color and I had to ask, “What the hell is that?”.
So he gave me the lowdown on the Bud Light flavors and how this was a new product and the company had high hopes for it, etc. I asked him if he had tried it and he said “No”. He’s a Michelob type of man. To each his own, I guess. So wre talked about the Orange flavored Bud Light for a bit and I mentioned that I’d like to try it some day, but it actually sounds kind of disgusting. Beer and orange? What the hell are they thinking? So about then, my Food Lion people showed up with my items to take to the church so I ended my conversation with the beer guy and went about my business and he did the same thing. After I loaded up my Blazer and was getting ready to leave, he came up to me and handed me a bottle of the Bud Light Orange. “Give it a try and let me know what you think”, he said as he put the bottle in my hand. So I took the lone single bottle of the Bud Light Orange to the house, placed it in the fridge and went about my business. And late last night, I remembered it was there and that brings us to the here and now. Last night, I tried an Ice Cold Bud Light Orange. And well, here’s the review:
I was cautious at first, not having drank any kind of beer or alcohol in quite a while, but took a small sip. And it’s not half bad. The orange flavor is kind of powerful at first, but not as sweet as I was expecting. It’s a unique and odd kind of flavor, like maybe orange jello perhaps. Not bad at all. It’s not something that I’d want to drink every single day, but for a change of pace, it’s a good mix of fruit and malt and so long as it’s cold, it’s a good fight the heat, summer beer. Once it starts to get warm, it’s not quite as good, but that’s all beer actually. I can’t honestly really see this having a long life or being a top product for Budweiser and within the next two years, it’ll probably be just a memory, but I was expecting something bad and it was a nice surprise. On the scale of 1 to 10 with one being the worst and ten being the best, I’d give it about a 6.5 or maybe even a 7. If I’m looking for something orange flavored to drink, I’d probably have a Mike’s Hard Lemonade Bloody Orange as my first pick, but if that’s not available, I’d probably give this a go. It’s not great, but its not bad either and if you like orange flavors, I’d say give it a shot.
And there you go. I’m not much of a drinker anymore these days, but this stuff, the Bud Light Orange, isn’t a bad way to go. Use it as a chaser for your bourbons and it’d probably just be just right.
Thanks for reading. Thoughts, comments and questions are welcome. And if you have any ideas for items for me to do a review on, let me know and I’ll give it a shot. I do all of this for you (and my own ego and self-gratification). Until the next time, take care.
