Tossing Salt Presents:
Dark Shadows Q&A
August 7, 2018
And yet another meaningless survey / Q&A that no one cares about and is frankly just being used for filler. I love me some Dark Shadows, both the original series, the books and the remake from 1991. The movie though? Not so much, but it has grown on me as time passes by. Eric did this Q&A for me and it’s taking up space in my “To Do” folder so I either need to just do it or else delete it. I’m not Matt Hardy so no “DELETE” for me. Let’s just get it over with and do it. And away we go.
Was Victoria Winters related to the Collins family?
That was never clarified in the original series, but I’m inclined to believe that yes, Victoria Winters was the secret daughter of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. If not Elizabeth herself, then it was someone very close to Elizabeth, maybe even Roger? There was a connection there and that was the big mystery of the series – is she or isn’t she? I think that she is.
Dark Shadows had many great characters, but the best in my opinion would be Willie Loomis. How he went from a worthless piece of crap drunk to a trusted ally and associate of Barnabas and Julia and evolved as a character was pretty amazing to see. Of course, with Barnabas as his “master”, he didn’t have a choice if he wanted to stay alive, but still..
Would you like to live at Collinwood?
Not really. It’s a beautiful house and the whole landscape, with the ocean so close and the woods, the family graveyard, etc. I’d love to visit and tour the home and maybe even stay a few weeks, but it’s too big for my tastes. I’d prefer as a residence something smaller and more intimate. Maybe one of the houses on the grounds or else the “Old House”. That would work for me.
Barnabas and Julia? Yay or Nay?
While Barnabas grew to have some affection for Julia and writing them as a couple is something I do regularly in my fan fiction stories, especially in my “Avenging Shadows” universe, I never really saw it in the series. Julia falls in love with Barnabas and that is obvious, but it wasn’t mutual. Barnabas loves Josette and had strong feeling for Victoria Winters. Julia was a friend, a trusted associate and ally and he respected her a great deal, but he didn’t love her, not in the romantic sense anyhow.
Barnabas or Quentin?
Quentin has always been more of my favorite. Something about men being dogs / wolves and those sideburns. Yum!
Thoughts on the Dark Shadows movie starring Johnny Depp?
At first, I hated it and even though Depp is one of my favorite actors and it had a cameo by Alice Cooper, another big plus, it just rubbed me wrong. But then I decided to put aside my love for the original series and quit comparing it to what I remembered and just enjoy it for itself and it started to grow on me. For a loyalist, it sucks, but taken as a solo-piece that I look at as a “alternate reality” from the original stuff, it’s not too bad. Depp is an amazing actor and his love for the Barnabas character is obvious.
What did you think of the 1991 revival?
In the words of The Miz, it was AWESOME! I liked it.
Could Dark Shadows be brought back as a series today?
With the right actors and writers, I suppose that it could be done. It’d be hard to compete with the original or the 1991 series, but the characters are strong and really stand out and the stories could be modified and updated to fit the modern times. It’d be interesting to see and if someone was to try and give it a shot, I’d watch and be open-minded about a reboot. It wouldn’t be easy to make it right, but yes, it could be done.
And there you go. I’m through now. So, any other fans of Dark Shadows out there? What do you think? Comments, thoughts and any questions welcome and appreciated. And with that, it’s time to go watch Smackdown Live. Thanks for reading and I’ll catch you later. Take care.
