WWE Starcade 2018
Thoughts & Predictions

Coming up on this Saturday night at the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio, is a classic Thanksgiving tradition dating back to 1983, Starcade. It’s not a pay-per-view or even a special event, but WWE will be broadcasting an edited hour special on Sunday on the WWE Network about this show and event. I remember the first ever Starcade very well. Yes, I’m old. Flair versus Race in the cage was the main event and it was the start of Flair’s second reign as the NWA World Champion. Plus Steamboat, Youngblood, Piper versus Valentine in a Dog Collar Match, Abdullah versus Colon, Jimmy Valiant and so many other great stars. And now, it’s a glorified house show for the WWE. Well, it’s a start and one day, I predict it will be a full fledged pay-per-view event again.

Anyways, the show is on Saturday night and the card, even though it’s been changed several times now due to injuries and other reasons, it jacked to the gills. And I decided that since I have a few minutes to kill before I go to work to face the Black Friday masses of humanity, looking for that after-shopping adult beverage, I may as well do a quick “prediction column”. This is a house show so don’t expect any title changes or big surprises other than a guest appearance or three. Let’s get busy and do this…

INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION – SETH ROLLINS vs DEAN AMBROSE
~for the INERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP in A STEEL CAGE MATCH~

These men know each other so well and this will be a match that sets the standards in brutality and great ring work. As I said a moment ago, don’t expect a title change here because this isn’t TV or a full pay-per-view or event. Look for blood, sweat, tears and lots of crazy as these two men walk that aisle and dish out the wham, bam, thank you Sam action. And in the end, Seth wins and retains.

Winner and STILL Intercontinental Champion: Seth Rollins

AJ STYLES vs SAMOA JOE in a STEEL CAGE MATCH

AJ just lost the WWE Championship to Daniel Bryan a few weeks ago. Joe was the first man eliminated at the Survivor Series in less than a minute. Both have something to prove. AJ has more to prove than Joe and this will be a night that the good guys dominate.

Winner: AJ Styles

UNITED STATES CHAMPION – SHINSUKE NAKAMURA vs REY MYSTERIO
~for the UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP~

I can’t see them giving Shinsuke a clean win, but I can’t see Mysterio losing either. Aw hell, I’m going to go against logic here and say that there will be one title change to make this event seem more “must see” and special. Rey isn’t but a shadow of what he used to be in my opinion, but Shinsuke is just drifting along and despite having good matches, is just kind of here. Look for the Rey Rey push to continue as he captures the belt. Oh wait, I just remembered that Rey is fighting Randy Orton right now and Orton attacked Rey this past week and unmasked him. And Randy’s dad was at the original Starcade in 1983. So forget what I said. Orton gets involved and delivers an RKO to Rey. The referee doesn’t see and Shinsuke takes advantage to score the win and retain his title.

Winner and STILL U.S. Champion: Shinsuke Nakamura

CHARLOTTE FLAIR vs ASUKA

This was originally Charlotte versus Becky, but since Becky got injured and Charlotte turned heel, they had to make some changes. I’d rather see this one anyways. Asuka is my new beloved (Ivory2.0) and I hate to see her lose, but that’s exactly what will happen. Her push is stalled and she’s being used more as a bad-ass afterthought right now. Unless Ronda Rousey shows up and clocks her ass and Asuka takes advantage to win, Charlotte will walk out of there with her arm raised. Hell, it’s Starcade and a Flair should always win at Starcade, right?

Winner: Charlotte Flair

SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS – THE BAR vs THE NEW DAY
~for the SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS~

No title change here. The New Day will be over like Grover, but in the end, Sheamus and Cesaro won’t just set the bar. They are the Bar. And they have a giant in their corner too. Fast and furious match, but in the end, the champs retain.

Winners and STILL Smackdown Tag Team Champions: The Bar

FINN BALOR vs DREW McINTYRE

Unless Finn decides to go all Demony on Drew’s ass, this match is definitely a victory for the big man. Drew is getting a strong push right now and I expect we’ll see him with the Universal Championship before Wrestlemania time. Balor is damn good and it’ll be a great match, but look for a Claymore and victory for the former 3MB superstar.

Winner: Drew McIntyre

THE MIZ vs RUSEV w/LANA

I like Miz and I think he’s awesome. Rusev is a another of my favorites although I do miss the Rusev Day connnection with Aiden English. Maybe we’ll see English make an appearance and get involved. That would be cool. Miz is getting a lot of TV time right now and working towards something with Shane McMahon so I can’t see him losing here. Or can I? What the hell. Let’s throw the fans a bone. Rusev wins after a distraction by Lana. It won’t hurt Miz a bit and Rusev needs the push and win.

Winner: Rusev w/ Lana

SPECIAL CONCERT – ELIAS w/WWE HALL of FAMER NATURE BOY RIC FLAIR

Elias plays music while Flair rants, struts and does lots of “Woooing”. Kind of like a Britney Spears show. Should be fun. I’d look for someone to come out and crack on Flair, only to have Elias whack them with his guitar to make the fans happy and make Flair “Woooooo” even more. Will we have an Arn Anderson sighting? This would be the place to do it.

PLUS, SASHA BANKS, BAYLEY, DOLPH ZIGGLER & MANY MORE LIVE!!!!

No idea what they’re doing. Wrestling probably, but the rumors are that Dolph is dealing with a foot injury so he may just second Dolph. Then Bayley could second Finn. Why not? This should be an exciting and fun show and event. I wish they were showing it in it’s entirety on the Network, but maybe next year. They are filming it and as I mentioned earlier, will have an hour long special on Sunday so we’ll see some of the action. Long live Starcade, the true “grand-daddy of them all!”.

And with that, I’m finished. I have to go to work now. Comments, thoughts and questions are welcome and appreciated. Until the next time, take care and support your local Indy wrestlers and wrestling promotions. Take care and I’ll see you at the matches.
