NXT Takeover: Phoenix
Thoughts & Predictions
January 25, 2019
Coming up on Saturday night in Phoenix, AZ is WWE’s latest edition of the NXT Takeover series. On Sunday night, we’ll have the Royal Rumble as the road to Wrestlemania officially begins, but the night before, it’ll be the “new kids” and future of WWE putting on an event and making their marks in the professional wrestling history books. I have thoughts and predictions to share. Let’s do this…
WWE NXT Champion Tomasso Ciampa vs. Aleister Black
Ciampa has really become a great heel and probably one of the best in wrestling today, regardless of the company or roster. He’s good in that ring to be sure, but when he starts to talk, you can’t help but want to boo and despise this man. Black is an amazing talent to be sure and has gotten better and better with each and every match and this entire feud and series of matches has been beyond spectacular to watch. I don’t see a title change happening here in Phoenix though. We may see some interference by Johnny Gargano, who still has unfinished business with his former DIY partner, but regardles of how it happens, I think that the WWE has other plans for Black, like maybe a trip to the main roster and the belt would be better off for the time being staying right where it is, with Ciampa. Tomasso wins.
Winner and STILL NXT Champion: Tomasso Ciampa
WWE NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler vs. Bianca Belair
Belair is a star on the rise and has recently earned praise from HHH about how good she’s gotten so quickly. But Baszler is no slouch herself and has really dominated the NXT Women’s Division in a way that only maybe Asuka can compare to. This one can really go either way so I guess it boils down to is WWE ready to move Baszler to the main roster and get that “Four Horsewomen” feud going or is she going to continue to kick butt and take names down in NXT as the dominating champion? I think that the pressure will be on Belair to stay strong and take the champ to the limit. No title change yet, but that may happen down the road. For this evening, the champ will stay the same.
Winner and STILL NXT Women’s Champion: Shayna Baszler
WWE NXT North American Champion Ricochet vs. Johnny Gargano
Another match that can go either way so far as the victor, but is promised to be off the charts in term of action and excitement. Gargano has Ciampa business on his mind so that might be a factor here and it wouldn’t even surprise me to see Ciampa get involved in some matter although even if that happens, it’s more likely in the main event match than this one. Is a DIY reunion coming eventually? I think so. I think that we’ll see Ricochet and Gargano trying to steal the show and having a fantastic match, probably the opener to get the crowd jacked up and going. Look for Ricochet to retain.
Winner and STILL NXT North American Champion: Ricochet
WWE NXT Tag Team Champions The Undisputed Era vs. The War Raiders
If we’re going to get a title switch at the Phoenix event, this is probably where it should happen. The Undisputed Era are damn good, but they are lacking a little something and we need to see them get pissed and angry and kick things up a notch. A loss to the War Raiders, who have been stalking and chasing the champions for some time, might do exactly that and be what’s needed. Undisputed Era is ready to move up to the main roster if desired and doesn’t need the titles. War Raiders could take it the next level and really make an impact with those titles in their grasp.
Winners and NEW NXT Tag Team Champions: The War Raiders
Matt Riddle vs. Kassius Ohno
This is the classic veteran looking to get respect versus the young upstart who seems to have his number. So far it’s been all Riddle with two wins previously over the one-time Chris Hero and now the question is, will it be one more for Riddle, bringing this to an end or will the dastardly Ohno steal one back and get some redemption. I expect that we’ll see Ohno dominate about 90% of the match and they will bring the house down with their in-ring antics. Riddle will take a beating and yet, just like a Timex, keep on ticking as he snatches a win out of the jaws of defeat when Ohno gets cocky and it ends up costing him everything.
Winner: Matt Riddle
And there you go. Thoughts and comments are welcome. Who do you think will win and lose at the NXT event? Will you even be watching? What NXT stars do you think will be staying around until Sunday night and participating in the Royal Rumble event? Inquiring minds want to know so give me a holler. And with that, I’m gone. Thanks for reading. Until the next time, stay safe and have a great one. I’ll see you at the matches.
