Tossing Salt Presents:
5 Questions
Country Music, Kevin Smith & More
March 28, 2020

Happy Birthday to my oldest brother, Steve Maynard. He turns 64 today! Love you bro!

And now, the intro. This world is full of questions and this is where I answer them, five at a time. Let’s do this…

What and who do you consider to be “real” country music?

Country music is music that tells a story, invokes a memory or feeling, and makes you part of the experience. It takes you in and leaves you shaking your head going, “Yep! That’s right!”. That stuff on the radio today, with few exceptions, isn’t what I consider to be country music. It’s just steam-lined generic lyrics with a corporate push. Waylon, Willie, Jones, Dolly, Travis Tritt, Jamey Johnson, David Allen Coe, Confederate Railroad, Reba, Hank Jr., Gretchen Wilson. That’s country music as it should be. Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and that crowd. They have some good stuff sometimes, but the rule of thumb to me is if you can’t get a crowd of rednecks and bikers to sing along at a show in a small run-down bar, it ain’t country.

Pineapple on pizza. Yes or No?

As my nephew calls them, Minions, but yes, pineapple on pizza is very good and I approve.

What is the strangest thing that you’ve seen today?

I work in a liquor store and the entire state in a panic mode due to Coronavirus so as you can imagine, it’s been one crazy and weird person after another. But yesterday, I did see a guy push his lawnmower across our parking lot. He was walking, stopped, pushed his mower back and forth a few times as if he was mowing the parking lot, then turned around and walked back the direction from which he had just come, pushing the lawnmower along the way. It was just odd.

What are the five best Kevin Smith movies?

All are good in my opinion, but the five best are, in no particular order, Clerks, Dogma, Mallrats, Clerks II and Tusk. Yes, I actually like that one. It’s weird as fuck, but strangely compelling too.

What is your favorite “adult beverage”?

I work in a liquor store, but I prefer beer, Bud Light to be exact. Go figure.

And there you go. My thanks for reading. Any comments, thoughts or questions of any nature about any topic, feel free and give me a shout. Until the next time, stay safe and be good. I’ll talk at you later.
