Tossing Salt Presents:
WWE Royal Rumble 2021
Thoughts & Predictions
January 31, 2021
Later today, live from the Thunderdome in Tampa, Florida, is the WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view. And of course, that means predictions. Let’s do this.
Men’s Royal Rumble match.
So who are the favorites? Edge and Randy Orton are starting off as the first two participants and I think that kind of eliminates them from making it to the end. It would be cool to see Edge going after one of the two big belts at Mania and would make a nice story, but will WWE go in that direction? AJ Styles seems too obvious a choice and Daniel Bryan would be a good sentimental favorite. Maybe Jey Uso to cause a little dissent in the “Family” with Roman Reigns? There really isn’t a clear favorite this year. Let’s go with my pick from a few days ago. I think it’s time to put Cesaro in the top tier of the roster and this is the best way to do it. So look for the Swiss Superman to take the win. As for guests and surprises, how about Gillberg, Scotty 2 Hotty, Brock Lesnar, and Kurt Angle. I also suspect we may (finally) see the return of Bo Dallas. Yes, I still Bo-lieve.
Women’s Royal Rumble match.
The obvious choice here is Rhea Ripley, who will be making her Rumble debut. Doesn’t Rhea versus Asuka sound like an awesome match? Number thirty will be Natalya, but let’s be honest. Who really cares? Carmella is a good choice cause Mella means money, but is she even in the Rumble? How about Beth Phoenix? If Edge manages to win the Men’s match, then having his wife and fellow Hall of Famer win the Women’s match would be extremely cool for the sake of history and a feel-good story. Unless we see the return of Ronda Rousey, which would be a great surprise, my pick to win is Rhea. As for surprises, we’ll go with Molly Holly, the before-mentioned Beth Phoenix, WWE Hall of Famer, and my one true love, Ivory, and Lisa Marie Varon, aka Victoria. And we might even see an appearance by the now-missing Lana. Where has she vanished to?
Winner: Rhea Ripley
Drew McIntyre defends the WWE Championship against Bill Goldberg.
I’ve got a bad feeling about this match, but I don’t think WWE would be stupid enough to give Drew the same kind of a slap in the face that they gave Kevin Owens & Brock by making them job to a washed-up old man with limited skills and moves and little, at least to me, appeal. But then again, this is WWE, right? Drew needs to win and win quickly and convincingly. Goldberg misses a spear, eats a claymore, and vanishes from our television and the WWE forever. Works for me.
Winner and STILL WWE Champion: Bill Goldberg
Roman Reigns defends The Universal Title against Kevin Owens.
Roman has finally found his niche and the whole “Head of the Table/Tribal Chief” routine works. Owens might come close, but he’s not winning here. Not now and not anytime soon.
Winner and STILL WWE Universal Champion: Roman Reigns
Asuka and Charlotte Flair defend The Tag Team Titles against Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler.
After seeing Nia Jax nearly injure Dana Brooke this past week on RAW, there is no way that she deserves to be rewarded. No title change here and if Nia is part of the Rumble, a quick elimination from the match is due. She really needs to go back to the Performance Center and tighten up her in-ring skills. That woman is a mess. So Asuka and Charlotte retain and keep the belts, as they should. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lacey Evans, Ric Flair, and maybe even Alexa Bliss make some kind of distractions during this match, but the end remains the same.
Winners and STILL WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions: Asuka & Charlotte Flair.
Sasha Banks defends the Smackdown Women’s Championship against Carmella
I would love to see Carmella win the belt here. I think her partnership with Reginald has been entertaining and how great would it be to see her and Reggie joined by James Ellsworth? Okay, I’m just fantasy booking and that won’t happen, but maybe have Ellsworth return as a surprise in the Rumble match and face off against Gillberg? That could be cool! As for this match, I’d love to see Mella win, but it won’t happen. The money in WWE right now seems to be Sasha versus Bianca Belair and while I don’t particularly care for either lady all that much, it’s what the fans want and WWE always gives the fans what they, want, right? Mella comes close but look for Snoop Doggy Dogg’s favorite cousin, who can actually do a crossbody from the top rope, to win and retain her belt.
Winner and STILL WWE Smackdown Women’s Champion: Sasha Banks
Bobby Lashley defends The US Title against Matt Riddle (if added).
This match, as of this moment, 7:23 am, has not been officially added to the Rumble event, but it makes sense and based on what happened Monday night, should take place. We’ll do a prediction just in case and it won’t make the fans of the man with one name happy. Riddle me this. Who is goofy and doing a bro-job later tonight? It’s he of the bare-feet and tight shorts, the man who used to have the name of Matt. Look for Lashley to retain.
Winner and STILL United States Champion, Bobby Lashley
And I guess that’s it. We may have another match added as the day progresses for the Kick-Off show. A Cruiserweight Championship match would be nice. Just saying, but we’ll have to wait and see. My thanks for reading. Any comments, thoughts, or questions, feel free and drop me a line. Until the next time, take care of yourself and stay safe. I’ll see you at the matches.
