Tossing Salt Presents:
The Elite, Gimmicks, Elias & More
December 16, 2018
Salutations and welcome to the pits of hell. No, I’m not at Wal-Mart. I’m just tired of this house, this town, my life, these cats and everything else. Or maybe I’m just hungry. I have chicken boiling and will be making chicken & noodles later today. Or I might make a cake. Naw, I ain’t no baker. But I am a good cook. And I’m still hungry and don’t want to wait. This town needs a Chinese place that delivers. And I need to have patience. So instead, I’ll do a Q&A about the world’s greatest sport. The questions come from a new reader and a man who I’m sure knows good chinese food, Anthony. He sent me some good questions and sir, I thank you for that. And now, let’s get to the answers. And away we go…
1. Do you think Cody and the Young Bucks can sustain their popularity to carry their own company? I loved All In but that, to me, seemed like a perfect storm. I fear the follow up, and their ability to sustain that excitement level, isn’t possible. Your thoughts, please.
Now that they’re through with ROH, it won’t be nearly as easy as it was. I’m hoping that they’ll continue to appear with New Japan to keep things moving and keep some momentum, but they’re going to suffer some backlash and the popularity will wane a bit. Can they maintain what they had going and keep it strong enough with an All In II? I really don’t see it happening. They need a regular stage to keep themselves strong and in the public eye. What’s left in North America? Impact? MLW? Evolve? Impact sucks and is just a shadow of what it once was and that was never much. MLW couldn’t afford them. Evolve is working with the WWE and… did I just say WWE? Unless we see an Elite invasion into the WWE for Cody and the Bucks, I don’t think the decision to leave ROH will prove to be a good one. The popularity will decline and things will be a little bit harder. That’s just how it is.
2. Which ROH wrestlers do you see stepping up in 2019 to combat the loss of the Elite?
It appears that the Bricoes have already stepped up, reclaiming the ROH Tag Team titles at the show this past Friday night. Also, Dalton Castle and Matt Taven look ready to move into top roles and along with Jay Lethal, that’s really all ROH needs as they re-set and move into the future.
3. What is your favorite “over the top gimmick that makes no sense” gimmick over the past few years, and all of time? For me, in recent years it has to be Jericho’s List.
My favorite was a blast from the past back in WCW when Disco Inferno began to, for no real reason I can figure, started carrying around a duck. Yes, I get the Disco Duck reference to the classic song by Rick Dees and all that, but it was still kind of just totally retarded and out there and I loved it. That would count for all time. As for more recently, I can’t really think of anything. Oh yeah, Alicia Fox’s long blonde wig that she’s been wearing lately. Why? It just makes her look demented and like a madwoman, but that’s probably the point. Hell, it’s Fox and she’s capable of anything. Being psycho is kind of her gimmick. So Disco’s duck and Alicia’s wig. And there you go.
4. Do you like the fact WWE switched NXT/HOF from the last few years?
Yes. This works better than the original schedule. Now the wrestlers can attend the HOF event and find a little time to get some rest the next day instead of being up too late for the HOF series and having to go straight to Wrestlemania the next day. It’s better for the fans too because now they can attend all three events (HOF, NXT and WWE) and still have time to attend some of the other events and shows that will be taking place that week. It’s much better for everyone.
5. Who do you think will headline the HOF?
For this coming year, I think if Undertaker decides to call it a day, he’ll be the headliner. I also expect to see The Midnight Express w/ Jim Cornette, Molly Holly, The Hart Foundation, Kane, Rick ‘The Model’ Martel, Lex Luger and Ivan Koloff (finally) and Cyndi Lauper as the Celebrity Inductee.
6. Could TLC be one of those sleeper ppvs that nobody talks about and winds up being really one of the better shows of the year?
The show is stacked from top to bottom and on paper, this card could be one of the best of the year. I have no doubt that the men and women of WWE will make sure that it lives up to the hype and exceeds all expectations. It should be really good.
7. Do you think Ambrose heel run has more potential than Rollins heel run did?
Nope because Rollins has a personality and makes a great heel Ambrose is just kind of stale and boring. He’s only been a heel again for a couple of months and I’m already bored with him. Seth is a better talker and in-ring worker, plus Seth had J&J Security with him and that made a world of difference as well. Rollins had a great run as a heel. Ambrose is just wasting space and time so far.
8. How over do you think Elias can get as a face?
As a face, I can see a run with the IC title eventually and maybe some tag team titles at some point, but not much more than that. I think Elias is much better than a heel and that’s where the true magic with his character lies. The face run is OK and he’ll get some kudos for it, but when it comes time to challenge for the Universal or WWE Championship, it’ll be as a heel where he’ll have the most success.
And there you go. My thanks for reading. Comments, thoughts and any questions welcome and appreciated. It’s time now to go watch WWE TLC. Have a great one and I’ll catch you on the flip side. Take care.
