Tossing Salt Presents:
Sting, Predicting The Future
January 6, 2019
Here I am still cleaning out my messages and inbox and I came across this 10-parter from Jay in CT. It’s a whole column by itself, right? At least I think so, so along with one question about Sting, sent by my buddy Matt, it’s time to get jiggy with it and do a Wrestling Q&A. And away we go.
Is Sting overrated?
Actually, in my opinion, he was majorly over rated. Apart from Ric Flair, who can make anyone look like a million bucks, who did Sting have great matches against? The man, Steve Borden, is a nice guy who has charisma and a great look, but he was not a top promo guy or great wrestler in that ring. His matches were okay at best, but so long as he sit his major spots, it didn’t really matter. Sting was the right guy at the right time for WCW and was the right guy to step in after Magnum TA was injured and Dusty took a step back to rival Flair and the Horsemen. And from those battles, a legend was born. So he’s an icon, a legend and a true superstar for the ages, but a truly “great wrestler”, he never was nor will he ever be.
And from Jay in CT: As the end of 2018 approaches here is my traditional 10-pack asking what will or won’t happen in 2019. I’m sure you will be 100% accurate.
1.) HBK will wrestle a match.
After making the show and wrestling in the tag match with HHH against Taker and Kane at the Saudi event, I think HBK has gotten the wrestling bug out of his system. While I can see a match with HBK versus Taker happening at Wrestlemania, I just don’t think it will. I think HBK will remain retired and on the shelf for the forseeable future.
2.) CM Punk will return live on WWE t.v. (yes, I ask this one every year).
When Smackdown Live goes to FOX next fall, I think that WWE will do anything and everything to make the show as big as possible and get as much attention as possible. And I think an offer to CM Punk for a limited return, aka a “Brock Lesnar schedule”, will be made. HHH and Steph might not like it, but it would be best for business and if the money is right, I think that we will see CM Punk and the “pipebomb” back on WWE TV.
3.) Drew McIntyre will win the Universal Championship.
I don’t think it will be at least until after Wrestlemania, but I do think that this will happen. 2019 is McIntyre’s year and I fully expect to see Drew wearing either the Universal or WWE Championship belts before all is said and done.
4.) Roman Reigns will return to WWE and wrestle.
I truly hope so, but not knowing the status of his medical condition or his health, I can’t do anything but hope and speculate. But I’m pretty confident that we haven’t seen the fall of the Roman Empire just yet.
5.) The WWE superstar who makes the biggest jump in 2019 from where he is now is…?
I’ll go with Heath Slater. Vince McMahon told Heath that 2019 will be his year and pretty much anything will be a step up from where he’s been on the card for the past couple of years, right? Just being on TV regularly and any kind of title contention, much less a title reign, will improve Slater’s place on the roster 100%.
6.) The women get an even bigger part of WWE t.v . than they did this year.
I don’t know if it will be a larger amount of time, but so long as Charlotte, Asuka & Becky for example keep kicking ass and bringing it as they have been, I’m pretty sure we’ll see the women get a big chunk of TV time and some great matches and spots on the PPV’s and other shows.
7.) Women main event either Mania or Summerslam?
If the women’s match is the strongest on the card or the most intriguing, then I can easily see it being the main event. I’m pretty sure that we’ll see the women headline several PPV’s in the months to come.
8.) When the new deal for Smackdown kicks in next fall they load up the roster to be better than Raw’s.
To be better than RAW? That I can’t see, but to be roughly equal to RAW and stacked with top stars, surprises and a lot of reasons for people to tune in and talk, most definitely. I don’t care how many billions of dollars Smackdown brings to the WWE, RAW will always be the A-show in the minds of Vince and the WWE and will always be treated as such.
9.) WWE booking gets better than it was in 2018.
I think so, at least for a little while. Then it’ll be the usual waves of good booking followed by a period of “what the…?” and then some good stuff again with a lot of hit and miss thrown in for good measure along the way. In other words, typical WWE.
10.) Cena & Nikki get back together again?
Who knows what will happen when you’re dealing with the human heart, but on this one, I don’t think it will happen. Cena is moving beyond Nikki and beyond the WWE as well with his movie career. Nikki would be a step back for Cena and I don’t think he’s looking any direction but forward.
Amd there you go. My thanks to Jay for the questions and to Matt as well. And thank you for reading. Any comments, thoughts or questions you would like answered, please let me know. And with that, I’m out of here. Until the next time, take care of yourself and each other.
