Tossing Salt Presents:
NXT Takeover XXV
Thoughts & Predictions
June 1, 2019
Coming up tonight, June 1, 2019, live on the WWE Network from Bridgeport, CT, is the twenty-fifth edition of NXT: Takeover, the showcase for the WWE’s NXT Brand. It’s another great card and a very special night for the WWE and the superstars of NXT. And so of course, it’s time to take a look at the matches listed for the event and do some Magic 8 Ball stuff, aka “Prediction time!”. So let’s put on the Sister Cleo robes, the Gary Spivey wigs and pull out those special cards and see if we can decide who should win and who should lose. It’s the Tossing Salt Prediction Column. Let’s do this…
Roderick Strong versus Matt Riddle
Riddle is probably the hottest guy in NXT right now who isn’t holding a title and sharing a common nickname with a Hall of Fame legend who has two elite sons, if you will. The man is good and getting better each and every match. I honestly feel that in the next three to five years, we’re going to see Riddle headlining Wrestlemania. He’s that good. He shouldn’t lose right now and Roderick Strong is one of those guys who can have a great match, still lose and come out stronger as a result. Does that even make sense? Well, I hope so because that’s what is happening here. Look for Strong to take Riddle to the limit and give him a fight he’ll never forget, but in the end, it’s the rising young sensation that will take home the victory.
Winner: Matt Riddle
NXT North American Champion Velveteen Dream versus Tyler Breeze
I am so happy to see Breeze working back in NXT right now. He has been so under-used and ignored while on the main roster, it’s not even funny. While I do enjoy his tag team work with Fandango and the comedy stuff, these two guys are great wrestlers and can do so much to help the WWE if only given the chance. Breeze is being given the chance once more. That being said, The Velveteen Dream is an amazing talent and a future big time main eventer for the WWE and I can’t see him losing that North American Championship anytime soon. I fully expect that we’ll see Breeze perform like he hasn’t in years and take Dream to and past the limit with many near falls and close calls. I think we’ll see a match for the ages with a combination of in-ring skills and showmanship that is far too rare these days. And Breeze’s chances of winning that North American title? For now, it’s all just a dream.
Winner and STILL North American Champion: Velveteen Dream
The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) versus The Forgotten Sons (Steve Cutler and Wesley Blake) versus The Undisputed Era (Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly) versus Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan in a Ladder Match for the NXT Tag Team Championship
I honestly don’t know where to go with this one because an argument can be made for each team and why they deserve to be the tag team champs for NXT. For some reason, my guts are saying that The Undisputed Era, being former champs, won’t be doing a repeat here. I also don’t really feel all that confident with the Burch / Lorcan team. So that leaves The Street Profits and The Forgotten Sons as the two choices. I think that this will be a night that the Forgotten Sons will be remembered and make their big mark and impact. I think this is the night that Cutler and Blake taste tag team gold.
Winners and NEW NXT Tag Team Champions: The Forgotten Sons (Steve Cutler & Wesley Blake)
NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler versus Io Shirai for the NXT Women’s Championship
Baszler is too damn good to lose the belt right now, unless she’s going to the main roster. I haven’t heard anything to suggest that so I’m just going to say that no title change here. Baszler retains.
Winner and STILL NXT Women’s Champion: Shayna Baszler
NXT Champion Johnny Gargano versus Adam Cole for the NXT Men’s Championship
I love watching Adam Cole perform and would love to see him have a run as the NXT Champion. I would love to see it, but I don’t really know if it’s time just yet or not. Gargano was moving to the main roster, but when Ciampa got injured, it was necessary to move him back to NXT and he’s been a fantastic champion ever since. And it just seems too soon to switch the title, even to someone as deserving as Cole. I think we’ll get one fantastic match and have enough near falls and two-counts to make your head spin. I think that both men will come out strong and look great, but when that final bell rings, I think that Gargano will still be wearing that NXT gold.
Winner and STILL NXT Champion: Johnny Gargano
