Tossing Salt Presents:
Ultimate Wrestling Q&A (Extended Edition)
CM Punk, AJ Lee, AEW, NXT and Much More
November 22, 2019
Dedicated to the memory of James Wayne Dameron. Rest in Peace, my friend. You will be missed!
It’s going to be a long one as I’ve got questions from Jesse, Matt and The Cheese that have been blowing up my inbox all day. I’ll try and keep the answers short and sweet, but it looks like it will be a fun one so hold on to your hat. And if you have any questions, about wrestling or anything else, drop me a line at Doug28352@yahoo.com and I’ll use them in a future column. Oh yeah, for those who are wondering, today at the Doctor’s office sucked! Just saying. So are you ready? Let’s do this…
Who do you consider the greatest wrestling commentary team of all time?
Of all time? That’s a hard call because many commentary teams had good runs and then like Lawler and Jim Ross, kind of lost it as time went on. Bob Caudle and David Crockett, the men who called Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling when I was growing up hold a special place in my heart, but Crockett kind of sucked as an announcer. Caudle worked much better with Jim Cornette and Dutch Mantell as his announce partners. Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura were awesome and so were Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan. I guess I’ll go with the threesome of Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan as my favorites though. When Heenan was on, he was the best color guy ever and Schiavone, same thing as the lead guy.
Is Kenny Omega over-rated?
Maybe he is and maybe he isn’t. I’ve only seen a few matches of his from Japan and only have the basis of his work in AAA and AEW to go by and for me, I’m not really impressed and don’t see what all the hype is about. He might be one of the best ever, but I don’t personally see it.
Thoughts on CM Punk’s return to wrestling?
I’m glad to see it. Punk loves wrestling and it’s good to see that the bitterness that he seemed to be holding for so long towards his time in WWE has finally faded. He’s a great talker, a very insightful analyst and truly one of the “best in the world”. It can’t be considered anything but a plus to have him back as part of the wrestling scene.
Right now, Punk works for FOX. Do you think he’ll eventually return to the WWE ring as a wrestler?
I think that a return to the ring, even if it’s just a one-off, is inevitable for Punk. He left a lot of unfinished business when he left WWE six years ago and there are so many great performers in action in WWE now, he’s got to be feeling that itch. It’s not if it will happen, but instead when.
If Punk does return to action, who would you like to see him wrestle against?
Punk and Seth Rollins are already trading words on Twitter so there’s a potential match right there. A match with Daniel Bryan would always be welcome and great to see. And maybe a “retirement match” at Wrestlemania against HHH where he can close the book on the whole bad blood situation would be really good to see.
Should Jim Cornette be fired from NWA Powerr for his racist comment during recent commentary?
The question is moot because the NWA and Cornette have mutually agreed to go their different ways due to the controversy of Cornette’s “chicken / Ethopia” remark. I get it how, in today’s overly politically correct head up the ass world, people are offended, but I don’t think that Cornette should be fired or have resigned or whatever you want to call it. He’s a great addition for the NWA and Poweerr and a suspension and / or a public apology should have been enough in my opinion. Corny will be okay though and so will the NWA. It’s just a shame that a smart-ass remark that wouldn’t have gotten a second look back in the 80’s or 90’s cost Corny his job as the play-by-play guy for the NWA . That was overkill and another solution should have been found.
Do you think Rusev sshould remain with WWE and sign a new contract or should he leave WWE and try somewhere else.
This whole story with Lana and Lashley is stupid and insulting and I understand why Rusev would be tempted to leave the WWE and go elsewhere. But he’s not going to make the money anywhere else that WWE is willing to pay. And don’t say AEW because unless they pick up their game soon, they’re not going to be around to do anything for anyone. It’s his call and whatever he decides, I hope he weighs all the options first. Rusev is a big star waiting to break out and deserves better than he’s been getting lately. Maybe things will get better. Maybe he should go elsewhere. Only he can say for sure.
Which event are you more excited for – NXT Takeover: War Games or WWE Survivor Series?
At the moment, NXT War Games has my interest much more than the Survivor Series. That may be because I have to do a NXT Takeover: War Games prediction column later tonight. But both shows look to be good and exciting.
Who is (was) your favorite member of the SHIELD?
I was never a big SHIELD fan, but I guess Roman Reigns got on my nerves the least of the three “brothers”.
Should WWE allow Hulk Hogan to have a final match at Wrestlemania?
Can Hogan even do the boot and legdrop anymore? He’s 66 years old and unless it’s just a shoot / squash where Hogan ends the match in 30 seconds with punch, punch, boot, legdrop, pin… no offense from the opponent, just like in all his WWE title defenses, I would be scared to let him in the ring. Any bumps at all would be a potential injury waiting to happen. Hogan should NOT wrestle any kind of match in the WWE or anywhere else, ever again. If he wants a final Wrestlemania moment, he can throw someone from the ring after a confrontation and then flex. But any kind of match, that should not happen.
Do you think AJ Lee will eventually return to the WWE?
CM Punk is there to test the waters and I’m sure, listening to her husband talk about the WWE, may ignite a flame or two for the former Women’s Champion. AJ versus Alexa or even against Charlotte or Becky could make for some good action. I won’t say she will be coming back to the WWE, but I’m sure they’d be glad to have her and well, never say never.
WWE already has NXT and NXT UK. Where should the next expansion of NXT happen?
I’ve heard talk of WWE hoping to expand NXT to Japan and Australia so one of those would probably be the most likely prospects. I’d love to see a NXT: France, but all the wrestlers there would just surrender upon confrontations. Okay, maybe not. An NXT: India makes sense too since they have over a billion people and a strong market for pro wrestling.
Besides the Executive Vice Presidents of AEW, who do you think are the “breakout stars” of the fledgling company?
The few people that stand out best for me in AEW that are not executives or named Jericho would be Dr. Britt Baker, Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy, MJF and the Best Friends. Shawn Spears is really good as well and I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do.
And there you go. My thanks for reading. Any comments, thoughts or questions, drop me a line. Until the next time, stay safe and have a great one. I’ll catch you later.
