Tossing Salt Presents:
Ultimate Wrestling Q&A
WCCW, Sami Zayn, Tommy Rich & More
May 22, 2020
I absolutely think that my good friend, The Cheese, has far too much time on their hands and a warped sense of humor, hence the latest round of questions sent to me just an hour or so ago. But it’s all good. I like it. It’s the Ultimate Wrestling Q&A. Let’s do this…
What would you think of a tag team of Marty Janetty and Buff Bagwell?
I think it would be a nightmare for any promoter dumb enough to book these two men together and a disaster for the team with the misfortune to have to face them in the ring. Buff isn’t a total waste, but Jannetty is a walking disaster. This would make for a train wreck of a team. If it ever happens, I want to see the videos.
Who do you think is the secret participant in the AEW Casino Ladder Match?
The recently released WWE guys aren’t available until July with two major exceptions, that being Drew Gulak and Sting. I think Gulak will end up resigning with WWE and Sting? It won’t be him either. I think our mystery man will be a swerve. How about the return of Joey Janela? Works for me.
Arn Anderson versus Jake Roberts. Who wins?
Are we talking about in their primes or now? In their primes, I think the dastardly Snake would find a way to steal the win. As for now, my money would be on the one-handed Enforcer. One spine-buster would be all it takes.
Tony Garea versus Giant Baba versus Baron Von Raschke. Who wins?
Talk about nightmares. Garea was a good wrestler but has the personality of a dead goldfish. Baba is a former NWA World Champion and a legend in Japan, but have you ever tried to watch him wrestle? It’s not a pleasant experience. The Baron had a great character and was capable of decent matches, but he wrestled some stinkers as well and some of his matches were hard to watch for very long. He’s a great tag team performer, but singles matches were not his forte’. I guess Baba would win. He’s the one with the political stroke and those incredible (?) chops. Baba wins and we all let out a sigh of relief when it’s over.
What would have happened with WCCW if Fritz Von Erich had expanded it to a worldwide company?
Bankruptcy and failure. Fritz had a good territorial product, but his insistence to push his sons over everyone else and lack of big ideas would have hurt more than helped. WCCW was a good niche product, but I can’t see the style of that territory having international appeal. The Von Erich’s are a legendary wrestling family and they deserve every accolade they get, but for a larger audience, more than just a set of brothers would have been necessary.
Ric Flair has signed a new contract with WWE. Good or bad idea?
It’s Ric Flair, the Nature Boy. While he isn’t what he once was, he’s still arguably the greatest World Champion of all time and he’s a valuable asset. Good move by the WWE.
Was WWE right to strip Sami Zayn of the Intercontinental Championship?
Yes. I think I already addressed this a couple of weeks ago, but I’ll say it again. Zayn is opting to stay home for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic and if he’s at home, he can’t defend that title. WWE did the right move by proceeding with taking the title back and holding a tournament. It gives them a story for Smackdown, some great matches, keeps the title active, and most importantly, sets up a feud for whoever wins the title against Sami Zayn to determine who the “real” champion is, ala Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels.
Do you believe that Tommy Rich did sexual favors for Promoter Jim Barnett and that’s why he enjoyed a 4-day reign as the NWA World Champion?
According to Harley Race, the business in Georgia was down and since Tommy Rich was the top baby-face for the territory, they did a short title-switch to kick start the shows and get the numbers up. And Tommy Rich says that it isn’t true either and he never kissed anyone’s ass to get anything. So the people involved say that the rumor isn’t true. Personally, my thoughts are Rich was a good looking kid, and if he slipped a little something-something to Barnett and got a reign as the NWA World Champion out of the deal, good for him. Do I think he did so? I know I would have in the same situation and I don’t think Tommy is as innocent or naive as he’s trying to pretend. Do I believe the rumors? Damn skippy I do.
