Ultimate Wrestling Q&A: Billy Gunn, Shortened Names, Jericho Dream Matches & More…

Tossing Salt Presents:
Ultimate Wrestling Q&A
Billy Gunn, Shortened Names, Jericho Dream Matches & More
November 13, 2020

I’m out of caffeine this morning. I’m drinking water instead of a Dew. It definitely must be Friday the 13th. Oy vey! Let’s do this…

Chris Jericho just celebrated his thirtieth year in wrestling. Who would you like to see Jericho wrestle that he hasn’t wrestled against yet?

After so many glorious years and runs in ECW, WCW, WWE, New Japan, and now AEW, there are not many people left that Jericho hasn’t faced off against. I don’t think he and Daniel Bryan ever had a one-on-one feud so that would be great. Jericho versus CM Punk would be another good one. And Adam Cole or maybe Samoa Joe? That could be fun to see.

On a scale from 1-10, how high would you rate the pay per view AEW Full Gear?

It was solid for the most part, but damn, it dragged in some spots as well. I love Sammy & Matt Hardy, but the Elite Deletion match could have been shortened by ten minutes at least. Omega’s match and the Moxley/Eddie match were damn good. I’d give it a solid 7.5 out of 10.

Thoughts on Billy Gunn?

Billy Gunn will never be a singles world champion, but he’s solid in the ring, still looks great, and is a valuable asset for AEW. With his experience and knowledge, he’d a capable talent who can fill any role on the roster from the opening act to the main event if needed. He lends stability to the roster and just seems like a good guy.

Davey Boy Smith Jr. is rumored to be on his final run in MLW, with his contract due to expire on December 18, 2020. Would you want to see him reunite with Brian Pillman Jr in AEW?

Pillman and Smith together in AEW? That would be cool to see and if Smith truly is leaving MLW when his contract expires, a move to AEW would be a positive next step for his career. It could also elevate Pillman from matches on AEW Dark and Sammy’s vlog to upper-card status. I think it would be good for all parties involved.

Why is Matt Hardy allowed to continue this Deletion gimmick? It was AWFUL.

Because Matt likes to do it, and he has a strong fan base, apparently including Tony Khan, that seems to agree. It’s not for everyone to be sure, and as much as I like both Matt & Sammy, the match at Full Gear had me groaning more than once. For Matt, the positives of the gimmick outweigh the negatives, and so long as that’s the case until he finds something new and better, he’ll keep on doing it. Only if he finds a way to reinvent and evolve his wrestling persona will the Broken Matt gimmick be DELETED!

I feel that Joe Hennig, Ted DiBiase Jr., and Cody Hall should join AEW under a new faction and call themselves Legend Version 2. (LV2) in AEW. Thoughts?

Cody Hall is good, but I don’t think he’s ready for AEW right now. DiBiase wouldn’t be welcome at AEW right now due to the legal issues of his brother and father. And I’d love to see Joe in AEW or Impact or anywhere for that matter, but I don’t think that this would be the right way to bring him in.

Which version of The Horsemen was your favorite?

For me, the originals of Ric, Arn, Tully & Ole were the best, followed by the Ric, Arn, Tully, and Barry Windham faction. I also give high marks to the Ric, Arn, Pillman & Benoit incarnation since they brought the legacy of the Horseman back to greatness after that dismal Paul Roma era.

From Kevin:
What are your thoughts on WWE shorting some wrestler’s names to just one name like Buddy Murphy to Murphy or Matt Riddle to Riddle?

While in some instances it worked, such as with Cesaro, for the most part, I don’t like it when WWE does that. Riddle is a great example of it not making sense. He has a full name, a name that’s established in MMA and wrestling, and WWE just wants to call him “Riddle”? Unless he’s going to start wearing a bowler on his head and tights covered in question marks, it just strikes me as dumb. I don’t get it with Buddy Murphy, who you mentioned, either. Can you imagine calling Barry Windham just “Windham”? Or Dusty Rhodes just “Rhodes”? It’s a Vince McMahon thing and I’m sure he has his reasons, but ninety-five percent of the time in this situation, he should leave their names as they are. He’s wrong.

And there you go. My thanks for reading. Any comments, thoughts, or questions you’d like to see answered, feel free to use the comment box or by e-mail (Doug28352@yahoo.com), and drop me a line. I’m going to go finish getting ready for work now and go get a Dew. Have a great day and be safe out there. Watch out for the crazies and don’t forget to show love to your local Independent Wrestling companies and wrestlers. The Indy stars of today are the legends and superstars of tomorrow. Give them your support when possible. I’m out of here for now. I’ll see you at the matches.
